He was at his home in Miles City, surrounded in love by his family. Mr. Olson was born April 12, 1926, at his grandmother's in Little Falls, Minn. He grew up on the family ranch northwest of the Killdeer Mountains in North Dakota. He spent more than eight years serving our country — first, during the Second World War, in the Philippines and Japan, and then in the Korean War, where he received two Purple Hearts. Upon discharge, he returned to the family ranch with his parents and brother. Mr. Olson was active in his community, serving on the Council of the First Lutheran Church, Dunn County Rural Fire Department Board of Directors, as a radiologist monitor, on the Board of Directors of Tarentaise of North Dakota, and the American Tarentaise Association. He served as president of the American Tarentaise Association for three years and was named Tarentaise Man of the Year in 1979. He was later named to the Tarentaise Hall of Fame. He was on the screening committee at the Denver Stock Show. He imported a bull from France, by way of Japan, and embryos from England. Mr. Olson artificially inseminated cows and heifers, did pregnancy checking, and cesareans for himself and his neighbors. On June 11, 1966, he and Sophie Olson were married and they raised three sons and one daughter. Starting in the fall of 1980 they spent a year at Pray while they traveled all over the United States looking for a new ranch. When they saw the size of the local deer, they knew they had found country that was good for cattle. They moved south of Miles City, on the Tongue River, which was half way back to where they started and ranched there for 11 years. Then Mr. and Mrs. Olson built and operated a gift and antique shop south of Rapid City, S.D., for a number of years. He built a 20-ton jackalope in front of the business. Mr. Olson used a wheelbarrow full of cement, one at a time. Mounted jackalope was one of his best sellers. Most recently, Mr. Olson owned and operated an antique store named Arts Antiques in Miles City with his wife Sophie, until the time of his death. His survivors include his wife, Sophie Ann; son, Brian and his significant other, Melody DeMint of Miles City and his children, Brooke (Jeremy Pyle) and Brittnee; son, Wade (T.J.) of Miles City and their children, Dannon and Traven; daughter, Leann (Shelby) Sowers of Billings and their children, Craig and Blake; and son, Lyle (Linda) of Denver, Colo., and their children, Ashleigh and Gemma. Survivors also include one great-grandchild, Danika Pyle; his sister-in-law, Sheryle Olson; and his nieces and nephews, Claudia, Wayne, Ward, Bernie, Denise, Marlease, Dean and Carmella. Mr. Olson was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Kenneth; his sister, Viola (Ira) Wing; and nephew, Kent. The family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Grace Bible Church in Miles City. Interment, with full military honors, will follow in the Eastern Montana State Veterans Cemetery.
