Read More	ARMY VETERAN- STAFF SGT 4th INFANTRY UNIT IN EUROPE WW2 Walter Raymond Boe, better known as “Wally” to his family and friends, was born to Robert and Nora (Mikkleson) Boe on April 11, 1922 on a farm near Hudson, SD. With the onset of the Great Depression, his family moved to northern Minnesota. Although the family struggled, Wally spent some of the happiest years of his life growing up with his older brother and two sisters. That happy period ended when his brother, Ralph, died in a tragic drowning accident in November 1936. Shortly after that, the family moved to Sioux Falls. During the trip, they were involved in a car accident, in which his father broke his back. So, at the age of 14, Wally had to drop out of school and get a job to support his family during his father’s recovery. Thus began a life of sacrifice and service to others. He was drafted into the Army in November of 1942 and was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, stationed in Europe. He was wounded twice in combat, receiving the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant and returned home in December of 1945. While serving his country, Wally sent much of his paycheck home to help his parents pay for their necessities. Virginia (Benning) was devoted to Wally throughout his years of service and they were united in marriage on January 4, 1946 in Sioux Falls, SD. Wally and Virginia shared 65 years of marriage and were blessed with four children. Wally worked various jobs until 1950 when he joined the City of Sioux Falls Water Department where he held a position as Supervisor of Tapping until he retired in 1984 after 34 years of service. In many ways, Wally was typical of his generation. He went to work every day, rain or shine. He paid his bills first and wouldn’t spend money he didn’t have. He raised his children without credit cards. He didn’t take a vacation for 20 years, “preferring” to work extra jobs to provide for his family. He always paid cash for his cars, and didn’t get his first new car until 1968. He made sure all of his kids extended their education beyond high school. When friends and relatives needed help, Wally was always there. He was a man of great faith, trusting in the Lord to guide him. In 1955, this hard-working man built his home from the ground up, working nights and weekends. It is still the family home. Through good times and bad, Wally always seemed to be whistling a tune and had a spring in his step. He had a great love for fiddle music. From the soft melody of a waltz to the snappy beat of a polka, Wally and Virginia would hit the dance floor in perfect rhythm as one. Most of all, Wally took great pride in his family. He looked forward to family gatherings and attended many school, sporting and musical events to support his children and grandchildren along with being entertained by the great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed bingo, cribbage or a friendly game of poker. Wally was a member of East Side Lutheran Church and a life member of the VFW, DAV and American Legion. Wally was truly a part of “The Greatest Generation”. Wally was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter; his parents; a brother, Ralph Boe; and two sisters, Mildred Damon and Minnie Brown. Wally’s family requests that memorials be directed to the East Side Lutheran Church Building Fund.
