William served as a Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army during World War II. He resided in Allegany County, Maryland prior to the war. He enlisted in the Maryland National Guard on February 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Cumberland, Maryland. He was noted as being employed in the manufacture of textiles and also as Single, without dependents. He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart. Service # 20342277 RE-BURIAL 1948 REBURIAL SUNDAY - Rites for Staff Sgt. William C. Kirby, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Kirby, Sr., 502 Montreal Avenue, who was killed in France June 31, 1944, will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the home of his parents. Military honors will be accorded by William C. Kirby Post No. 70, 29th Division Association, named in honor of Sgt. Kirby. The Body will arrive here tomorrow afternoon. Kirby Burial Service Set For Sunday The body of Staff Sgt. William C. Kirby, 25, first local veteran of Company G, 29th Division, to be killed while serving with that unit in France, will arrive here tomorrow at 2:10 p.m. at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Kirby, Sr., 502 Montreal Avenue. Rev. Allen B. L. Fisher, pastor of Grace Methodist Church, will officiate and military honors at the grave in Rose Hill Cemetery will be accorded by William C. Kirby Post No. 70, 29th Division Association. The organization was names in his honor December 10, 1945. On arrival here the body will be met at Queen City Station by an escort of the 29th Division unit according to Commander Robert C. Metlick. Sgt. Kirby was killed June 21, 1944, near St. Lo after participating in the Invasion of Normandy. He entered Company G here in November, 1939, and was inducted February 3, 1941, when the unit was federalized. He was a corporal and was later advanced twice in grade to become the organization's communications sergeant. He went overseas October 6, 1942, and landed in England. He met his death while on duty during a mortar barrage as American troops were still trying to secure their beachhead. His decorations include the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, ETO campaign ribbon with one battle star and bronze arrowhead, Victory ribbon, Presidential Citation and the Combat Infantryman Badge. A former Celanese employe, Sgt. Kirby was married to Barbara Ways, this city and is the father of a daughter Karen Kay, whom he never saw. Also surviving are two sisters, Geraldine Kirby and Mrs. Dorothy Fees, and three brothers, John, George, Jr., and Ronald Kirby, all of Cumberland. Henry Hart Post No. 1411, Veterans of Foreign Wars, representatives of other veteran organizations and former comrades will participate at the reburial service. Published Thursday, May 13, 1948 in the Cumberland Evening Times, Cumberland, Maryland, page 17, col. 7. WEDDINGS Kirby-Ways Miss Barbara-Mae Ways, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Ways, 19 Sommerville avenue, and William C. Kirby, 938 Maryland avenue, were married Saturday evening in the parsonage of the First Methodist Church, Bedford street, with Rev. George E. Baughman officiating. Attendants were Pvt. 1st Class John M Love, Company G, Mrs. Jane McLaughlin and Mrs. George Kirby. The bride is a graduate of Fort Hill High School and is employed by the Celanese Corporation. Mr. Kirby attended Fort Hill High School. They are spending several days in Washington.
