Description	:	St. Elmo “Speedy” Felkel, 97, of Hanahan, SC, an engineer and real estate developer, passed away peacefully on April 17th after a long battle with multiple illnesses. His funeral will be 12:00 Noon Monday, April 22, 2019, in the Midway Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Interment will follow at 4:00 PM in the White House Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner. Mr. Felkel was born August 18th, 1921, in Elloree, SC, to Hugo Felkel and Maybelle Stroman Felkel. He graduated from both the University of South Carolina and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before serving in World War II and the Korean War. During WW II, he was the second in command on the ship repair base in Guam. He settled in Charleston, SC, afterwards initially working with J.C. Long before branching off into his own engineering and development company. He developed most of Goose Creek, as well as parts of Johns Island, James Island, Summerville, and Florence, SC. He donated land to over a dozen churches in the Goose Creek area and due to his commitment to the youth of the community, he also donated land for the Felkel Field Sports Complex. Mr. Felkel remained the oldest registered engineer in South Carolina for the last 10 years, and he was the first person to privately own a water and sewer system in the State. He lead a life of grandeur, while remaining humble, and acquiring great landmarks such as, the Angel Oak and the Morris Island Lighthouse. Mr. Felkel was on the Board of Regents at Liberty University, and was a founding member of the American Legion Post in Goose Creek. He was an avid donor to numerous charities, both local and national. Mr. Felkel was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Bettye Stevenson; two children, Edward and Susan; and two brothers, Dal and his wife Clarine, and Hugo. He is survived by his children, Randall, Samuel, Stephanie, Amber, Von, Lottie, Hans, Seth, and Stroman; a brother, David and his wife, Annette; 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
