Description	:	Charleston - Jewel Parniece Gasque Felkel died March 24, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina after a very long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. The eldest child of Mattie Mae Parler Gasque and Edward Everett Gasque, Jewel was born October 29, 1924 in Elloree, South Carolina. A very proud graduate of the 1945 class of Coker College, she taught the 3rd grade at Summerville and Saint Andrews elementary schools for many years, where she made lifelong friends with her fellow teachers. Read More	Charleston - Jewel Parniece Gasque Felkel died March 24, 2015 in Charleston, South Carolina after a very long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. The eldest child of Mattie Mae Parler Gasque and Edward Everett Gasque, Jewel was born October 29, 1924 in Elloree, South Carolina. A very proud graduate of the 1945 class of Coker College, she taught the 3rd grade at Summerville and Saint Andrews elementary schools for many years, where she made lifelong friends with her fellow teachers. She married S.E. Felkel in 1949. Jewel loved painting and taking art classes with local artists, playing bridge, collecting American antiques and ink wells. Her vast collection of ink wells have been sought after by many, with some of her finest pieces deriving from the privies of downtown Charleston homes. She loved spending summers at her home in the mountains of North Carolina and watching the boats pass by from her home on Charleston Harbor. Along with her best friend Ann G. McGinnis, she started the Flea Market in Charleston's City Market in 1972. Together in 1976, they opened the Plantation Shop at Magnolia Plantation. She retired in 1993. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Lambreth MacEldowny Ladies Circle, the French Huguenot Society and The First Families of South Carolina. She was also an advocate of the Friends of McLeod, having resided on James Island for over 60 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Suzanne Gasque, her brother, Edward Everett Gasque, Jr. and her son Edward Gasque Felkel. She is survived by her son Randall Everett Felkel and his partner, Jay Mitchell Crosby of Charleston and her daughter Stephanie Anne Felkel of Hickory, North Carolina. Jewel is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Her service will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church, corner of Pitt and Calhoun Streets, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, March 26, 2015. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the Residence. Burial will be at 3:30 in the afternoon, Friday March 27, 2015 at Santee Cemetery in Elloree, South Carolina. The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers in the Memory Care Unit of Ashley River Plantation and Savannah Grace; both fine facilities with extraordinary staff who take care of the victims of Alzheimer's disease.
