Stan passed away Monday, Dec. 28, 2009 at Avera St. Luke's Hospital. Stanley F. Geranen was born Feb. 6, 1922, to Fred and Rose(Korpi)Geranen in Frederick, SD, in Richland Township. He attended Richland Township School and graduated from Frederick High School in 1940. Stanley worked at Lockheed Vega Aircraft Company in Los Angeles, CA, until World War II began with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Stanley taught himself to read music and bought his first regular accordion in 1945. He enlisted in the Army in June 1945. He was preparing to go overseas and had to drop off his accordion while in line, but his buddies helped carry it as they enjoyed his music. When asked for volunteers to serve as military police, Stanley was the correct height and weight and was recruited into the military police force at Sing Sing Prison in New York, guarding German prisoners of war. He received an honorable discharge in December 1946, and returned to South Dakota to farm with two of his brothers. Stanley married Signe Luttio April 14, 1949 in Frederick. They farmed in the Frederick area for many years. In 1978, they moved to Aberdeen. Stanly served for over 30 years on the Richland Township Board. He played the accordion for dances as "Stan and His Country Boys" for several years and later entertained at area nursing homes. Stanley is survived by his wife, Signe, of Aberdeen, one daughter, Diane (John) VonBank, of Shakopee, Mn; one son, Alan (Peggy) Geranen of Frederick, SD, and one grandson, Mark (Shannon) Brooks, of Chanhassen, Mn. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Ed, John,Raymond, Reino, Waino and Marvin; Fice sisters, MamieMarklund, Lempi Nixon, Laimi Nixon, Mary Ann Brick and Delores Winter; and two infant siblings. Honorary pallbearers will be Jamed Geranen, Dayton Geranen, Fred Geranen, Robert Nixon, Roger Nixon, Dennis Geranen, Russell Geranen, Roger Geranen, Gordon Geranen and Kerry Nixon.
