Description	:	Stella Cross was born at Stringtown, near Belington in Barbour County, WV on 18 Sept. 1883. She was the daughter of Simpson Cross (1842-1918) and Elvira Poling Cross (1847-1931). Stella married Eugene Shomo (1886-1952) at Stringtown, near Belington in Barbour County, WV on Apr. 14, 1906. Eugene was the son of George Nixon Shomo (1852-1906) and Eliza Virginia Viquesney Shomo (1852-1929). Read More	Stella Cross was born at Stringtown, near Belington in Barbour County, WV on 18 Sept. 1883. She was the daughter of Simpson Cross (1842-1918) and Elvira Poling Cross (1847-1931). Stella married Eugene Shomo (1886-1952) at Stringtown, near Belington in Barbour County, WV on Apr. 14, 1906. Eugene was the son of George Nixon Shomo (1852-1906) and Eliza Virginia Viquesney Shomo (1852-1929). Eugene and Stella Cross Shomo were the parents of the following 7 children: Golf Arden Shomo (1907-1977) was their oldest son. Next oldest child was Winslow Shomo, who was born in 1908 and died in 1908. Their third oldest child was a daughter, Virginia (1910-1911). Infant son Shomo was the next one born (1912-1912). Then their second daughter was born: Vernie Beatrice Shomo (1913-1999). Vernie married Robert I Phelps. Their youngest daughter was now born, Mittie Shomo (1916-2004). Mittie married Harley Smith. Their youngest son, Leslie Wilbert Shomo (1919-1990), was born 8 years before his mother's death. Leslie served in World War II and died in Chicago, IL. Goff, Winslow, Virginia, and infant son were all buried at the K & P Cemetery in Junior, WV. Stella died at the Grafton hospital in Taylor County, WV on 15 Jan. 1928 after having gall bladder surgery, leaving behind 4 children. She developed pneumonia. Stella was 44 years old. She was buried at the K & P Cemetery at Junior, WV near her husband's family and her 3 children who had died at a very young age. Stella's parents are buried at the Stringtown Cemetery near Belington, Barbour County, WV. Her dad and 6 of her uncles served in the Civil War. Eugene and other family members continued helping with the children. Vernie dropped out of school to cook, can and help care for the younger children. Eugene was a retired WV coal miner and a farmer. Connecting Barbour County, WV in the 1800s with Anne Arundel County, MD in the 1600s I am so thankful to my 2nd cousin, Nadine, daughter of Geneva Phelps for sending some of her mom's books to me. One of the books she gave to me is called, "The Founders of Anne Arundel and Howard Counties, Maryland" by J. D. Warfield, 1990 – 1st published in Baltimore, MD in 1905. I'm on the 1st chapter called "Our Early Settlers" and immediately, I start connecting our Barbour County, WV ancestors with this book. I noticed that my cousin, Geneva who has written a few family books and a few books about Flemington, Taylor County, WV has marked the name "John Watkins" on page 5 and 7. Right away I start seeing other names from our family tree on ancestry.com. Here are some of the connections of our Barbour County, WV family and our Anne Arundel County, MD family: Page 7 covers our family names in the first 3 paragraphs. "Edward Lloyd was both burgess and justice of Lower Norfolk (in Virginia). There is a deed on record from Francis Watkins, late wife of John Watkins, of Virginia, then wife of Edward Lloyd, in which she surrendered her dower to Edward Lloyd in consideration for his payment of a certain sum to her son, John Watkins. NOTE: My dad, Robert I Phelps was born in Barbour County, WV in 1908. His great granddad was Walter Watkins Phelps (1801-1897) who moved from Baltimore, MD to Grafton, Taylor County, WV as pattern maker for the B & O Railroad. John (1611-1648) and Francis Watkins were Walter's 4th great grandparents and my 8th great grandparents. Their son, John Watkins II (1637-1682) was Walter Watkins Phelps' 3rd great grandfather and my 7th. Next sentence in this book: "This agreement was carried out by Edward Lloyd (1605-1695) when commander of the Severn. He surveyed a tract for his "son-in-law", (step son) "John Watkins". Edward Lloyd was Walter Watkins Phelps' 4th great grandfather and my 8th great grandfather through his daughter, Alice Lloyd Watkins who married John Watkins. Next sentence: Edward and Cornelius Lloyd were near neighbors in Virginia, in 1635 of Matthew Howard and Ann, his wife. The latter names his son Cornelius in honor of Colonel Cornelius Lloyd. NOTE: Edward Lloyd (1605-1695) was the son of Cornelius Lloyd (1585-1654) and the 4th and 5th great grandfathers of Walter Watkins Phelps and my 8th and 9th great grandfathers. Matthew Howard (1609-1659) and his wife, Anne Hall Howard (1609-1659) were the 6th great grandparents of Walter Watkins Phelps' wife, Catherine Ann Haynes (1813-1878) who was born in Maryland and died in Grafton, Taylor County, WV and my 10th great grandparents. Next sentence: "Two more prominent Virginia officials, Colonel Obedience Robins and his brother, Edward Robins, sent representatives to Maryland. The former was the brother-in-law of Captain George Puddington. The latter was the father-in-law of Colonel William Burgess and Richard Beard, all settlers of South River, Maryland, in 1650. NOTE: Back to ancestry: My mother, Vernie Shomo Phelps was born in Barbour County, WV in 1913 and her mother's name was Stella Cross Shomo (1883-1928) also from Barbour County, WV. Stella's 6th great grandfather was Edward Robins (1602-1641). Edward Robins was my 8th great grandfather. His daughter, Rachel Robins (1631-1681) married Richard Beard III (1626-1680), my 7th great grandparents. On page 11 "One more surveyor, destined to be better known in history, was Robert Proctor, who took up "Proctor's Chance" in 1679 on the west side of the Severn River. This tract became "Proctor's Landing" and was his residence in 1681". NOTE: Richard Beard III and Rachel Robins Beard were parents of Rachel Beard (1650-1719) who married Robert Proctor (1617-1695). Rachel and Robert were Stella Cross Shomo's 4th great grandparents and my 6th great grandparents. Interesting to note here that Robert Proctor was the son of John Graye Proctor (my 7th great grandfather) who was born in 1583 in London, England and died in 1628 in Pace's Paines, Jamestown, VA. John's mother was Alice Gray Proctor (my 7th great grandmother) who was born abt 1587 in London, England and died aft. 1627 in Jamestown, VA. Alice Proctor became famous and there are some you tube videos about her. She is listed as a Heroine of Virginia: Alice Proctor, who lived on Proctor's creek near Richmond, and who, in 1622, defended her plantation against savages with great bravery. She is referred to as "Mistress Proctor, a proper, civil, modest gentlewoman." She afterwards refused to obey the order of the council to abandon her house for a safer location at Jamestown, and would not retire till the officers threatened to burn it down. She was widow of John Proctor. I will enjoy reading more in this book about our Taylor County and Barbour County, WV and our Virginia and our Anne Arundel County, MD ancestors and connections in our family tree.
