Born Sept. 22, 1930, in Dedham, Iowa, to James and Marie Balukoff, Stella’s parents immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 from Bulgaria. They settled into farming to support eight children until 1939 when they opted to purchase and operate a DX gas station and cafe in Dedham until they retired in 1953. While attending high school in Dedham, Stella, editor of the school newspaper, was awarded the Quill and Scroll Award from the International Honor Society for High SchoolJournalists. Earning achievements for speed and accuracy in typing and Gregg Shorthand, these became valuable secretarial skills. While living in Dedham, she met and later married Robert J. Jacobs on Sept. 26, 1949, sharing 68 years together. Leaving Dedham in 1952, Stella and Robert relocated to Davis, California. While raising their family of nine children, they owned and operated J& J Auto Service on Olive Drive in Davis for over 45 years until they retired. As parishioners of St. James Catholic Church, Stella joined the Women’s Guild, as secretary and eventually president, assisting in church activities. While six of her children attended St. James School, she volunteered in the library and on field trips. She enjoyed travelling, cake decorating, sewing and spending time with her family. Stella is survived by her husband, Robert J. Jacobs; her children, Robert L. (Marcia) Jacobs, Jay (Tara) Jacobs, Jennifer Calori, Cynthia (Peter) Benson, Daniel (Vicki) Jacobs, Christine (Michael) Accardi, Ramona McGrury and Kathleen Lindsley; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two on the way. Her only surviving sister, Marie Burns, of Manning, Iowa, celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan 18, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Marie; four brothers, Peter, John, Anthony and Louie Balukoff; two sisters, Anne Neuerburg and Matilda Shutt; daughter Melinda (Todd) Jacobs-Culpepper and granddaughter Veona Marie Jacobs.
