Read More	KILLED BY CARS. Stephen Gregory, Aged Citizen, Meets Instant Death This Morning. Stephen Gregory, aged 86 years, was killed by an incoming freight train about three quarters of a mile east of the Milwaukee depot at 9:20 this morning. Conductor Jake Birron was in charge of the train and Hubert Sheldon engineer. The engineer saw the old gentleman on the track and sounded the danger signal and he stepped off the track and turned facing the oncoming train, but was not far enough from the track and was strcuk by the engine and hurled to one side. There was a fracture of the skull of about two inches above the right ear near the crown of the head, the right arm was broken and the ribs on the right side crushed in. Otherwise the body was not mangled. Death was instantaneous. Coroner W.E. Daniels was notified and had the remains conveyed to McCallister's undertaking parlors and prepared for burial. Deceased left his home in east Ninth street at 8:30 this morning. He was seen in Egan avenue at about 9 o'clock and evidently went south to the rail road track, wandering along the right-of-way until run down by the train and killed at 9:30. The point where the accident happened was six blocks almost directly south of his residence. Stephen Gregory was born at Shelby, Orleans county, N.Y. Feb. 8, 1819. He was married twice, his first wife dying after a married life of sixteen years. Two children survive this marriage - Mrs. Preston of Durand, Wis. and Allen Gregory of Salem, this state. His second marriage was to Lucy Page, at Naples, Wis. Feb. 10, 1861. Six children of this marriage survive: E. E. Gregory of this city, Sherman of Colman, Gilbert of Webster City, Iowa, William of Salt Lake City, Thomas a resident of South Dakota. Also Mrs. David Smith of Pipestone. Deceased enlisted in company E. 17th Wis. Vols. Nov 1864, and served until July 1865, being discharged at Louisville, KY. He came to Madison in 1897. Awaiting the arrival of absent children, the funeral will be announced later. The tragic death of her husband was a great shock to the aged wife. Being much the stronger physically, she had given her husband care that was child-like, and it was pathetic to see her walking with him hand in hand and guiding him at street crossings as a mother would her child. Coroner Daniels summoned a jury consisting of L.T. Love, E. L. Kingsley, E. Sheridan, and testimony was taken from Conductor Birran, Engineer Sheldon and others, to about the same effect as the circumstances related above. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, the circumstances of which were unavoidable.
