Description	:	Stephen was the youngest of 7 children born to Freelinghuvsen W and Margaret E Garner Myers on August 10, 1888 in Missouri Valley, Iowa. His father was a soldier in the Civil War, and has an extensive obit on his memorial. In 1900 his family was living in Taylor Township, Harrison County and his father and older brother were farming. Only Stephen age 11, and his brother, Carlos Upton age 27 with his two daughters, "Lola M and Lalla J" (an infant), were living with his parents. Read More	Stephen was the youngest of 7 children born to Freelinghuvsen W and Margaret E Garner Myers on August 10, 1888 in Missouri Valley, Iowa. His father was a soldier in the Civil War, and has an extensive obit on his memorial. In 1900 his family was living in Taylor Township, Harrison County and his father and older brother were farming. Only Stephen age 11, and his brother, Carlos Upton age 27 with his two daughters, "Lola M and Lalla J" (an infant), were living with his parents. Carlos was already widowed in 1900, and tragically, 5 year old Lola was accidentally shot and killed by an 8 year old playmate with a small rifle. In 1905 there is a brief census showing Stephen at age 16 being in the 9th grade. August 10, 1909 Stephen married Mattie Hayward, the daughter of John F and Allie E Fleck Hayward, in Shelby, Iowa. It appears Mattie and Stephen did not have children. In the 1910 census, Steve and Mattie were farmers in Taylor Township with a young man, Vern C Becker, for help on the farm. September 21, 1917 Stephen enlisted and served in WWI until December 5, 1918. I imagine his family was thrilled he came home safely. By 1920 while still farming, Mattie's younger sister Alice Hayward, age 27 is living with them. Alice was not employed. 1930 finds Alice still living with them and now his uncle, William A Myers aged 82 years is living with them also, and they have a boarder named Samuel A Griggs. By this time his brother Carlos has remarried and has several more children. He also farms in the same township. Stephen's 1942 WWII draft registration states he was 5'9", 175 pounds with blue eyes, brown hair, and light complexion. Sadly, Stephen died in Fort Snelling, Minnesota on July 13, 1951, I wonder if he was visiting the historical landmark, as he was listed as living in Marcel, Minnesota, and another record states he was a resident of Iowa.
