When they came to America they used the American name Lee as their surname. -------------------- From the book, History of Buffalo County, (Nebraska) page 295: The first settlers in the region afterwards named Sartoria, came in the fall of 1877. They were Norwegians named Lee. They consisted of the parents, four stalwart sons and two grown up daughters. They took three homesteads at first and more afterwards. They had but one team. Began breaking prairie early in April and ended in June. With that only team, they went to Kearney, once a week (twenty-eight miles) to get their two plows sharpened. They raised eighteen bushels of sod corn to the acre that year. The Lees, though prosperous were impressed by a spirit of expansion to seek better opportunities, sold out their holdings to a colony which came from Iowa. ----------------- Steven B. Lee (Mason City Transcript - issue of Jan. 21, 1897) Steven B. Lee died at his residence 8 miles south of Mason City on Thursday, Jan. 14, 1897. He had resided in Custer County since 1879 and was among the first settlers in the Scandinavian settlement on the basin, came from Wisconsin to Nebraska. He was the father of Canute, Bronson, and Louis Lee who lived near him and Nels Lee who lives west of Ansley. He also leaves a wife. His difficulty with the English language kept him from taking an active part in community affairs. Note: Steven B. Lee's first wife and mother of his children, Ellen Lee, died 9th of April 1887, aged 69 years (gravestone, no obituary available) He married 2nd to Mrs. Gertrude Knudsen who survived him. Burial: Basin Cemetery south of Mason City, Nebraska.
