Son of Rene Julian and Eleanor "Ellen" East OBITUARY THE CHARITON PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Wednesday, July 30, 1884 DFEATH OF STEPHEN JULIAN Stephen Julian, of Cedar Township, was found with his head and part of his body in a partially filled rain barrel at his house, on Tuesday morning. He had been in very poor health since last spring and slept downstairs while the family occupied rooms in the second story. Though quite unwell, it had been his habit to get up early and make the fire. On Tuesday morning, his son, not hearing his father as usual, got up and went down stairs. Not finding him, he went out and was frightfully shocked to see him with the upper part of his body in the rain barrel at the corner of the house. The son at once aroused the family when it was found that life was gone. His hands were tightly clasped. How long he had been there they could not tell as he was cold in death when found. Whether in the despondency of ruined health he had taken his own life, or whether in extreme weakness in attempting to get water from the barrel he had become exhausted and could not extricate himself, will now never be known. Words are out of place now, but the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community is with the stricken family. Mr. Julian was among our best known citizens. He was a man of high moral convictions and stern honesty. He served six years as a member of the Board of Supervisors and his sound judgement, good sense and strict integrity won for him the respect and confidence of all who came in contact with him. He served in the war for the union in Company C, 13th Regiment of Iowa infantry and was a faithful soldier. Captain McCormick says he has heard Mr. Julian say many times that he was never sick a day in the army, that his regiment never made a march, stood picket, or engaged in battle that he was not with it. He was a member of Iseminger Post G.A.R. of Chariton. The deceased leaves a wife and several children in comfortable circumstances, having been an industrious and prudent man, he had accumulated a fine property. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
