Read More	From "For Love of a Rebel": Stephen William Rouquie was born in Georgetown, SC, on August 29, 1829, was the son of Gabriel Rouquie and Jane Daniel. His paternal grandfather, Stephen Rouquie, was a native of France before coming to America. His maternal grandfather, John Daniel, assisted in the establishment of American independence during the War of the Revolution, serving with the rank of Sergeant in the 1st South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Colonel C. Pinckney. Margaret Elizabeth Wilson Thompson and Stephen William Rouquie were married at Rural Hall Plantation on the Black River on November 20, 1851. They established their home directly across from the Winyah Indigo Society Hall, and there they lived together in unity of spirit and in great happiness for 59 years until separated by death in 1910. Stephen William Rouquie was one of the leading merchants of Georgetown prior to the War Between the States, and it was on the second floor of his store building, located next to the old town clock, that Captain Thomas West Daggett made the "torpedo mine" that sunk the Harvest Moon, Admiral J.A. Dahlgren's flagship, on March 1, 1865, in Winyah Bay. At the outbreak of the War Between the States, he volunteered his services to the Confederacy and personally equipped Company "A" with uniforms, blankets, etc. He was mustered into service on July 19th, 1861 at White's Bridge, South Carolina, under Captain Plowden C.J. Weston, as First Lieutenant, Company A, 10th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, receiving his commission from F.W. Pickens, Governor and Commander-in-chief of South Carolina, August 4th 1861. He served under command of Lieut-Colonel C. Irvine Walker and General Arthur Manigault. While his regiment was at Corinth, Mississippi, in General Bragg's Army, he was taken so extremely ill during an epidemic that he had to resign May 25th, 1862, by special orders. The papers of his commission and registration are still extant. On recovering from his illness he returned to active duty and served at Battery White under Capt. F.M. Melchers until hostilities ceased. He then returned home and for the next several years endeavored to support his large family, a wife and nine children, by resuming the planting of rice at Rural Hall plantation; but it eventually became a hopeless undertaking under the prevailing conditions, and finally the destructive hurricanes of August 1893 and September 1898 crushed all lingering attempts. The plantation was sold and he retired to less arduous duties in town, due to advancing age. On November 8th, 1916, Stephen William Rouquie died, and was laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. His name is on the Confederate Monument in Georgetown, SC, and on the Roll of Honor in the Confederate Museum in Richmond, VA. --- NOTES: The Harvest Moon dates do not conflict with Stephen returning to active duty after his illness. Christopher James Rouquie 1854-1875 died at 21 from hemorrhagic fever. Margaret Jane Rouquie lived 1858-1860.
