Mitchell died Thursday evening, Jan. 25th, of hardening of the arteries at the age of 50 years. Sterling P. Mitchell was one of Culbertson's most prominent citizens. He came to Eastern Valley county, Montana, about 25 years ago and was for many years foreman of the Star Cattle company, which was sold to the Diamond Company about ten years ago. He was born in Missouri in 1856, and left home at an early age going to Texas and trailed up from there to this country with the Star outfit. Mr. Mitchell was a lifelong Democrat and was twice elected as county commissioner of Valley county. He was a very public spirited man, with a heart and purse always open for the good of the community. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Glasgow many years ago and when Trowel Lodge was organized in Culbertson he became a charter member. After quitting the employ of the Star Cattle Company he took up a homestead and desert claim and became a prosperous and influential farmer, being a pioneer in that line in this vicinity. He was known all over the State of Montana and loved and respected by all. His name Sterling was emblematic of his character, for his sterling qualities were known to all. A couple years ago he built one of the finest residences there are in Culbertson in which he installed his family, but he himself passed most of his time on the ranch. Mr. Mitchell leaves a wife and four children, Maggie aged 17, Harley 15, Wilie 14, and Harry 7 years old, to mourn the loss of a fond husband and loving father. He was an uncle of Sterling C. West. The funeral will take place from his Culbertson residence at 2:30 p.m., Sunday afternoon, under the auspices of the Trowel Lodge AF&AM. -- 2 Feb 1912 (from obituary) Mr. Mitchell was married Nov. 2, 1892, at Culbertson, to Miss Mary Hurley and to them was born three children, Maggie, Hurley and William, all of whom survive their father. Mrs. Mitchell preceded her husband to the new world on Jan. 4, 1900. On Jan. 5, 1902, Mr. Mitchell married Maude Martin. To this union was born one child, Harry, now 7 years old.
