He lived throught the Battel of Breakneck Ridge in the Phillipines during World War II. and for more than a decade, he survived cancer. He delivered ice, carried mail and became a sheet metal worker with Omaha steel. After his retirement from Omaha Steel, Czapla operated a lawn service in the Omaha area with his brother, Edward, who preceded him in death. Steve Czapla served in the Army for nearly three years during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. Among his decorations were the Bronze Star and a combat infantry badge. Czapla was known for his kindness and soft-spoken manner, said Chris Costantakos, his attorney and friend. "He never had an unkind word to say about anyone," she said. "He had a rare gift of patience that you don't see today. He had reason to be angry and frustrated and maybe desperate with his medical condition, but he never complained."
