He passed away at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston, Iowa on Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Steve grew up in Decatur, Iowa and attended school at Central Decatur Schools in Leon. He started out working at Smith Oil gas station in Leon before he became an over the road truck driver. He finished his working career as a heavy equipment operator moving dirt. He retired in 2005, due to health reasons. On September 21, 1986, he married Kimberly Dawn Fry in Leon, Iowa. They renewed their vows on their 10th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their son, Clayton, was born in March of 1999. In his free time, Steve used to drive in stock car races in Osceola, Iowa. He always enjoyed watching drag races and tractor pulls and fishing. Preceding in death was his dad, Raymond Smith; grandparents, Jim and Leone Smith and Forrest and Dorothy Rauch; aunts and uncles, Evelyn and Raymond Palmer, Margaret St. John, and Frances and Don Carson; cousin, Jimmy Palmer; and mother-in-law, Sharon Fry. Survivors include his wife, Kimberly Smith of Leon, Iowa; son, Clayton Smith, of Leon; mother, Hazel Smith of Decatur, Iowa; brother, Dennis Smith and companion, Suzanne “Limey” Spring, of Lyford, Texas; sister, Marlene Perry and husband, Richard, of Decatur; sister-in-law, Carolyn Smith, of Woodburn, Iowa; father-in-law, Gene Fry of Leon; brother-in-law, Kevin Fry of Van Wert, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
