Description	:	Whitney was one of the earliest residents of Presque Isle, arriving in March 1846, when he purchased the Presque Isle Tavern. As a young man Whitney moved from Phillips, Maine to Nashwaak, New Brunswick where he remained six years. He married in 1835 and resided in his wife's hometown of Bridgewater until 1846, interrupted by another three years in New Brunswick. He was elected State Senator in 1859,... Read More	Whitney was one of the earliest residents of Presque Isle, arriving in March 1846, when he purchased the Presque Isle Tavern. As a young man Whitney moved from Phillips, Maine to Nashwaak, New Brunswick where he remained six years. He married in 1835 and resided in his wife's hometown of Bridgewater until 1846, interrupted by another three years in New Brunswick. In Presque Isle he was tavern keeper, hotelkeeper, postmaster, merchant and farmer. He built a general store and purchased the Fairbanks property, including the mills and the hotel. He was elected State Senator in 1859, the year Presque Isle was incorporated, becoming the only Democrat serving in the 1860 Maine Senate. In December 1862 he was appointed the Sutler or supplier for the 7th Maine Volunteers, filling that position for three years. Whitney was described as a community benefactor. He built the first bridge across the Presque Isle Stream and donated the land for the Town Hall and the Congregational Church. He established a school in an old Gristmill chamber. His obituary described him as: “Great-hearted, generous, public spirited, kind and accommodating, he exerted a powerful influence in moulding the destinies of the frontier community. In all the relations of life, as husband, father, brother, neighbor and friend, he was faithful and true, and enjoyed the confidence of all to a marked degree. As a neighbor and friend, he was ever kind, social, sympathetic and obliging. The suffering and needy never went empty-handed from his hospitable door.
