Susan Hildebrand was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Hildebrand, was born in Augusta County, Virginia, May 29, 1851. In 1854 she came to Iowa with her parents and settled in Johnson county, later moving to English township, Iowa county, where she resided till her death. On January 28, 1873, she was united in marriage to Mr. Oliver Berstler and the home was made on a farm. To this union were born 10 children. The youngest died in infancy, and those left to mourn are Mrs. John Thornton and Mrs. W. C. Thomas, of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Burt Wyant, Millersburg, Mrs. Harry Morse, North English, Carl, Sam, and Earl Berstler, near Millersburg, and Perry and Bruce, of the home. In her youth she became a member of the Christian church at North English and upon her moving to Millersburg this membership was transferred to the M. P. church, of which she remained a faithful member until death. Besides the children, she leaves 28 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Mrs. Berstler was a woman noted for her strength of character and those homely and stable virtues that make such an appeal to all who rightly measure and value those human and Christian qualities that make the world better by their presence and influence; she was a great mother, always solicitious for the welfare of her children, and sought constantly by word and precept to make them worthy members of the community. She was noted for her kindly charitable disposition, and many a home was cheered in times of sorrow by the ministrations of this good woman. She was universally loved in the community in which she spent so many happy years, and when she died the loss was keenly felt by all. Grandma Berstler will long be missed from the old home neighborhood, and to the bereaved relatives the sincerest sympathies are offered from all."
