Read More	The Phonograph St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska Thursday 29 October 1914 p. 1 Grandma DEVRY Last week the Phonograph noted the passing of a good woman, Mrs. DeVry, who died at her home in this city last Tuesday. the following few facts in connection with her life will be of interest to her many friends among the readers of the Phonograph. Miss Susan Gustroff was born in Hanover, Germany, August 24, 1834. Her girlhood days were spent in the "Fatherland" and at the age of 24 she came to this country, settling in Harrisburg, Pa. At Harrisburg she met Theodore DeVry, to whom she was united in marriage on January 1st, 1857. In 1869 the DeVry family came west stopping in Omaha for a brief time. While his family remained in that small village Mr. DeVry came to Howard county and took up a homestead, selecting the place where Mr. Schack now lives. Here they made their home until 1901, when they moved to this city and since that time she has been a resident of this city. Mrs. DeVry was well known by all our early settlers and it was six of her old neighbors, neighbors of the early days in Howard county, who were pall bearers. She endured all the hardships incident to pioneer life, always being a real helpmeet to her husband and family. everybody in this section of the country were well acquianted with Grandma DeVry, as she preferred to be called. She was a member of the Presbterian church and was a faithful member at that. She took great comfort in her religion and it was a source of strength and comfort to her during her later life. She leaves to mourn her death five children: Cyrus DeVry of Chicago, T. N. DeVry, Frank DeVry and Nicholas DeVry of this city, and Mrs. G. E. Barrett, of Denver, Colorado, as well as eight grandchildren and a multitude of friends all over the country who will be pained to learn that she is gone. During the past six years, or since the death of her husband and father, Theodore DeVry, Mrs. DeVry has been very carefully cared for at the old home and her son "Dory" is entitled to much commendation for his attention to her. It is true a man should always take care of his parents, but in hundreds of instances it is not done, so that when we see a man treat his aged mother like Dory DeVry has, we cannot help but take off our hat to him and commend him as highly as we can. The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church last Sunday, at 2:30, Rev. Davies officiating. The large church was crowded to its capacity by friends and acquaintances who desired to pay their last respects to the memory of a departed friend. After the services at the church the remains were conveyed to Elmwood cemetery where they were laid by the side of her husband. the floral display was fine. Banks of beautiful cut flowers covered the casket and as the funeral cortege left the church, four young girls, associates of the grand children of the deceased, carried arms full of flowers. The Phonograph desires to express condolence and sympathy to the bereaved family. they can take great comfort from the fact that they had such a good mother and that her life was well spent in this world. CARD OF THANKS We desire to take this method of returning thanks to all the kind fiends and neighbors for their assistance and help during the sickness and after the death of our beloved mother. Your kindness shall never be forgotten. THE DeVRY FAMILY ***** The Phonograph St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska Thursday 22 October 1914 p. 1 GRANDMA DEVRY AT REST The angel of death entered the DeVry home, Tuesday evening and called the mother of the DeVry boys to her heavenly reward. for several months she was a very sick woman and owing to her advanced age her condition was hopeless. The funeral will be Sunday afternoon from the Presbyterian church and interment will be made in Elmwood cemetery. the Phonograph will have a complete obituary next week and in the meantime we wish to extend condolence and express our sympathy to the bereaved family.
