Description	:	Susan T. Strong Keyes was born in Hartland, VT to Israel Strong and Lucinda Hunt Frary. Her parents married in 1805 in Hartland, VT. Susan's father Israel would die in 1822 when Susan was 4 years old. A search of the Lebanon, NH Town Clerk's office of the old records did not yield her father's death certificate, and his parentage is not certain. Susan's father Israel would die in 1822 when Susan was 4 years old. On Susan's death record it lists her father Israel's occupation as a Lumberman. ***I have a theory (as yet unproven) that her father Israel was the son of Hartland, VT resident and Revolutionary War soldier Phineas Strong, not another Israel Strong, based on 3 bits of circumstantial evidence since the early Hartland, VT vital records were lost that would give Israel's parentage. 1) The middle name "Whiting" is passed down from Phineas Whiting Strong (he was called "Whiting Strong" in "The Old and New Magazine" that detailed his wife Rachel Wright's marriage to him and the old house they lived in). The name Whiting was passed to Phineas' possible son Frederick Whiting Strong that lived in Hartland, VT with Phineas and Israel, and moved to Williamstown, VT. Susan's father Israel Strong (Frederick Whiting Strong's likely brother) also named a child Frederick Whiting Strong. 2) Phineas Strong (possible father), Israel Strong and Frederick Whiting Strong (possible brothers) follow each other in the census records. In the 1800 Lebanon, NH census, Phineas Strong has 1 M 16-25 (could be either Israel or Frederick Whiting Strong), 1 M Over 45 (Phineas himself), 1 F 16-25 (possibly daughter Mercy Strong), 1 F Over 45 (wife Rachel Wright Strong). In 1810 Phineas, Whiting (Frederick Whiting Strong) and Israel Strong are all enumerated alphabetically next to each other in Hartland, VT. 3) Israel Strong is often mentioned as Susan's father Israel Strong's father, but I have seen no reference of another Israel Strong that came to Hartland, VT in the time frame. Israel Strong lived in NY and has 2 kids I know of, but none named Israel. I've read the wills of the other Strong families living in Hartland, VT in the time frame and they don't mention an Israel or any of his numerous orphaned kids by 1822. Phineas died without a will in 1822 and was likely poor at his death. Again, this connection is unproven theory. I'm hoping to find Payment Voucher papers from the Revolutionary War from the NARA, but that quest hasn't gone well yet. Susan married Luther H. Keyes and they had 2 children that I know of. George F. Keyes and Emma Esther Sophia Keyes Large. Susan's husband Luther died in 1877 and in 1880 she was listed on the Hanover, NH census as a cook at the Dartmouth Hotel. Her either cousin or half sister or aunt Amanda Strong Frary (Amanda left everything to "her sister, Susan Keyes" in her 1891 will) and her brother in law or cousin or uncle by marriage Horace Frary owned the Dartmouth Hotel in Hanover, NH. It was sold in 1884 and on January 4th, 1887 the Dartmouth Hotel burned. Dartmouth College would buy the lot and erect on that spot the building that would become the Hanover Inn. On May 11th 1895, based on her death certificate, Susan died of epilepsy. She is buried in the Ladd St. Cemetery in Haverhill, NH.
