Susanna Yahn was born in 1835 in Switzerland. Her maiden name was Sigrist/Siegrest/Siegrist. I do not know how old she was when she arrived in the United States of America. She ended up living near Centralia, IL. She married Francis Yahn who had come to the United States of America from Austria. It is thought that he had two children at the time of their marriage. Julius was a stepson and Anna was his daughter from a previous marriage to a lady named Theresa. Theresa had died so he had both children. It has also been suggested that he and Theresa had another son named Francis. Francis and Susanna had a daughter named Emma and a son named Francis. When Emma was eighteen months old the family moved by covered wagon to Kansas, settling northwest of Emporia; Kansas. Francis was born after they came to Kansas. The family is listed on the 1870 United States Federal Census living in Lyon County (northwest of Emporia). Later the family moved to a farm west of Dunlap, Kansas. The family appears on the 1880 United States Federal Census living in District 139, Valley, Morris, Kansas (near Dunlap). Ages at this time were listed as follows: Francis (head of household) 58, Susanna (wife) 44, Julius (son) 21, Anna (daughter) 20, Emma (daughter) 12, and Francis (son) 7. The Julius listed as Julius Yahn was actually the stepson Julius Logan. A link to him is at the end of this memorial. OBITUARY Mrs. Susannah Yahn, wife of Francis Yahn, living near Dunlap, died cn Tuesday, Jan. 19th, of pneumonla, resuiting from the grip. Her age was fifty-seven She leaves her husband and a son and daughter, the latter of whom is married, to mourn the loss of an affectionate wife and mother. The funeral will take place Thursday, and the enterment at Dunlap cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Yahn were old settlers in their locality, and the bereaved husband and children have the sympathy of many friends in their affliction.
