One account states that her husband's grave (or headstone) was moved to the new location of the First Baptist Church, as the church's founder, when new highway construction was planned which would destroy the old cemetery. It is unclear whether Mrs. Burriss' grave or tombstone were moved but there is no marker evident today at the First Baptist Church. It was said that she was completely illiterate until after her marriage and their son taught her to read. Her knowledge of the Bible became so great that her husband frequently consulted with her when writing his sermons. "She was known far and wide for her knowledge of the bible," Ed Hillhouse wrote. "Other Baptist ministers often came to visit Rev. Burriss's wife seeking her opinions or advice on particular knotty questions of scripture and faith." They were buried at the OLD Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, located at what is now 1901 S. Murray Ave., Anderson, SC 29624. This property is now the headquarters of the Saluda Baptist Association (address 1901 South Murray Avenue; Mailing Address: Post Office Box 13005, Anderson, South Carolina 29624). The Association has never erected an appropriate historic marker at the site of the old cemetery and original Mt. Tabor Church. Neither Rev. James Burriss nor his wife is buried at First Baptist; they were buried at the old Mt. Tabor Church on South Murray Ave., at that time described as "near Orr Mills." The church name changed to First Baptist later. "The original cemetery was destroyed by highway construction. This cemetery was located where the Saluda Baptist Association Office is. Rev. James Burriss' tombstone was moved to the new First Baptist Church, but his wife's was not, and the bones of both were left on South Murray Ave." So James Burriss has TWO GRAVES. Some family trees show her as born in Ireland, which appears to be incorrect.
