Description	:	Bryan is the eldest son of James and Susan Cain Burriss. Having been brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, he was converted at an early period of life, and in the year 1831 made a deacon of Salem Church, which was followed in 1833 by a license from his church to preach. In 1836 he moved to Pickens county, where he remained for several years. He served as pastor for a number of years at the churches in Cross Roads, Flat Rock, Neal's Creek, Barker's Creek, Salem and other churches in the Saluda Association. He was a man... Read More	Bryan is the eldest son of James and Susan Cain Burriss. Having been brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, he was converted at an early period of life, and in the year 1831 made a deacon of Salem Church, which was followed in 1833 by a license from his church to preach. In 1836 he moved to Pickens county, where he remained for several years. He served as pastor for a number of years at the churches in Cross Roads, Flat Rock, Neal's Creek, Barker's Creek, Salem and other churches in the Saluda Association. He was a man of sound mind and unblemished piety, and gained considerable knowledge of the Scriptures. By trade he was a brick mason and assisted in building the courthouse at Anderson, South Carolina, the main building at the Pendleton Cotton-Mills, besides a number of churches and other important building in the county. For this work, he received $1 a day and it is said he never allowed a church to pay him more than that for his Saturday's labor, always giving the Sunday's service extra. It appears, however, that he did not always get that much. It is told that he sometimes served churches 15 or 20 miles from home that did not pay him enough during the year to keep his horse shod. Bryan was married 3 times. 1st was Elizabeth Brown who he married in 1815 and had 14 children. She passed away and he married in 1840 Elizabeth Wigington who lived about 5 years and had 3 children.
