"Syd was born on on the Snippen farm in rural Yankton County, on 20 January 1931, to William McKinley and Anne Marie Louise (Geraldson) Hansen. "Syd was born on on the Snippen farm in rural Yankton County, on 20 January 1931, to William McKinley and Anne Marie Louise (Geraldson) Hansen. After graduating from Yankton High School in 1949, Syd worked on the family's farm before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, along with his brother, Jack, in 1951. The brothers were air-control tower operators at Yokota Tower in Japan and members of the 1954-1 AASC detachment during the Korean War. "On 29 May 1957, Syd married Rosalie Hollman at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Syd then attended Southern State at Springfield and Yankton College in 1958-1959. Syd and Rosalie spent the early years of their marriage between Yankton and California, settling permanently in Yankton in 1965. "It was in California where Syd began his career in transmissions. Syd had his first shop in Yankton, on Broadway, in 1965, and bought Syd’s Salvage in 1968, which he operated until 2002. Additionally, he and Rosalie also ran the Westside Raceway racetrack from 1969-1970. "Syd was a stubborn man, but had a generous heart that touched countless people. He didn’t have an enemy in the world. The words 'stranger' and 'can't' were not in his vocabulary. He had a strong work ethic and was always positive. Syd loved animals and customers at the shop were often greeted by one or two ‘bow-wows’ and, sometimes, a bird! Syd was also a member of the Yankton VFW and Moose. "He loved music and could sit down at any piano or pick up an accordian and play by ear, no sheet music required. He played in several bands with family members and friends throughout his lifetime and, later, enjoyed Karaoke at family get-togethers. "Left to continue on his memory are his five children, Laurie Neisen, of Spearfish, South Dakota; Steven Hansen, Holly Hansen and Deena Hansen, all of Yankton; and Janel Hansen, of Sioux City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Matthew, Whitney and Nicholas Neisen, all of Spearfish; brothers, Ronald Hansen, of Sioux Falls; James (Judy) Hansen and Kenny Hansen, both of Yankton; sisters, Betty (Bill) Cullen of Yankton; and Connie Bornitz, of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law, Cynthia Hansen, of Sioux Falls; along with many nieces, nephews; grand-nieces and grand- nephews. Syd was preceded in death by his wife, Rosalie; parents; grandparents; and brothers, John and Gerald 'Jack' Hansen. "The mold was broken when they made Syd and his memory will live on in those who knew him and anyone in the community who met him. "Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, 26 July 2010, in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Dave Wildermuth officiating. Pallbearers were: Matthew and Nicholas Neisen; James, Kenneth and Walter Hansen; Mark Gleich; Michael Bornitz; and Joe Diliger. Visitations were held from 6 to 8 P.M. on Sunday, 25 July at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a 7 P.M. prayer service, and at the church on Monday, one hour prior to his service. The family requested memories of Syd be shared at the visitation or on his Facebook page, if unable to attend. "As Duke would say, 'Keep Smiling!'
