Whitmore was born in Ira, Vermont, October 28, 1840 and died in Wayne, Nebraska, March 1, 1923 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and one day. He was the son of Edmund and Henrietta Welmarth Whitmore, who grew to manhood in his native town. At the age of 21 years, Sept. 11, 1861, he enlisted for three years in Co. F., Col. He was the son of Edmund and Henrietta Welmarth Whitmore, who grew to manhood in his native town. At the age of 21 years, Sept. 11, 1861, he enlisted for three years in Co. F., Col. July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, Virginia, he was wounded during the seven days’ fight. This disabled him and he was discharged Sept. 11, 1862. After returning from the war, he married Octavia Parks, Jan. 1, 1863. Their children were Helen (H.W. Wellman) of Knox County, Nebraska; Henrietta A. (C.T. Anson), who died March 3, 1895 and S.B. Whitmore of Wayne, Nebraska. His wife, Octavia, died Jan. 25, 1911. He is survived by one daughter, one son, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. In 1879 he settled on a homestead in southwestern Knox county, Nebraska. Here he built a sod house. For the next few years, he endured every suffering and hardship of pioneer life. He succeeded in getting a post office established, which he named Venus. He was postmaster there for 13 years. He was a member of the Methodist church at Venus. He was also active in politics and was a member of the Knox county board of supervisors. He retired from farming several years ago and has since made his home with his son. For several years he owned a small tract in Florida, but moved back to Nebraska. The body was brought from Wayne to Orchard by train. The remains now rest in the Hope Cemetery beside his wife. ...Info from Nebraska Compendium and Roots Web Researchers in Vermont have come to question the parentage given above and have sent the following information. I've spent several hours today going over Sylvanus L. Whitmore's pedigree with the Rutland County historian. We believe that Sylvanus' obituary and the Compendium of History, Reminiscence and Biography are incorrect in naming his parents as Edmund Whitmore and Henrietta Welmarth, for we can find no evidence that such people existed. On-line family trees that rely on these sources above [both probably derived from the same original source] hypothesize that Edmund, the so-called father of Sylvanus, was the son of Edmund Whitmore and Chloe Wilmarth of Ira, VT. There is no evidence to support this. "Son Edmund" is given an approximate birth date of 1820 and an approximate death date of 1840-1850. There is no birth record for him, although there are birth records for the other children of Edmund and Chloe. He does not have a marriage or a death record. More importantly, when Edmund died in 1832, his under-age children were named in the probate records and guardians were assigned. A son Edmund was not named or provided for, although he would have been less than 21 years old at the time of his father's death and would have required a guardian. In addition to finding no evidence that Edmund and Chloe (Wilmarth) Whitmore had a son named Edmund Whitmore, we found no vital records for Henrietta Wilmarth (or Welmarth) his purported wife and the mother of Sylvanus. Accordingly, we believe that Sylvanus may have been the illegitimate son of Henrietta Whitmore, daughter of Edmund and Chloe, who lived in their household until her death in 1853.
