Geddis, one of the pioneer residents of the valley, and a charter member of the Ellensburg Lodge, A. F. and A. M. died Saturday at the home of his brother in Lebanon, Oregon, according to word received by his relatives here yesterday. Mr. Geddis was at one time one of the most extensive cattle and land owners in the valley, and one of the most prominent and public-spirited citizens of the early days. He built the Geddis block on the southwest corner of Fourth and Pearl and when the structure was destroyed in the fire of 1889 was one of the first owners to commence rebuilding operations. Mr. Geddis was born in Warren County, Pennsylvania, February 12, 1838 and crossed the plains to Oregon in 1846. He served with distinction in the Rogue River Indian War in 1855 and on May 29, 1859, he married Emily C. Tourman in Linn County, Oregon. In 1869 the Geddis family moved to Washington. A ranch was taken up in the Moxee, which was later sold. Numerous ranches were purchased from time to time in the Kittitas Valley, among the most notable of which were the 800 acres northwest of the city where William Packwood now resides, and the 409 acres in the lower end of the valley now known as the Pat Lynch Ranch. Mr. Geddis was actively engaged in the the butcher business in the store room now occupied by the Kittitas market and also owned many thousand head of cattle. The first imported stallion in the valley was brought in by Mr. Geddis. Of the family of 10 children, seven are living, three of whom are in the valley. They are Ollie Geddis, Mrs. J. H. Van Gesen and Mrs. Ivan Wilson. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning from the Masonic Temple here. Ellensburg Daily Record, January 4, 1912
