Thursday, March 27, 1924 AN OLD SETTLER CALLED. Sylvester Kirtland Card was born near Dow's Mill, in Cass township Harrison County, Iowa, March 13, 1856. Departed this life at his late home in Logan, Iowa, March 22, 1924, having attained the age of 68 years 9 days. His early life was spent in the pioneer home of his parents, Reverend Kirtland and Polly Card on the farm, where he was born. In 1859 he moved with his parents to Shelby County, returning later in the year to Reeders Mills. He united in marriage with Mrs. Elizabeth Ervin Bostic February 27, 1883 at Harris Grove. To this union were born four children:--2 sons and 2 daughters. All of these survive except Everett who preceded his father in death, when Everett was 15 years of age. The children living are Osman Card, of Boise, Idaho; and Mrs. Eva Mitchell of Boone, Iowa; and Mrs. Irene Myer of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Before coming to Logan to live he engaged in farming and followed this vocation for many years. He liked the freedom of the out of doors and chose the work of the railroad under the employment of the Illinois Central. No night was to dark nor weather too stormy for him to answer the call for orders for special work on road. He remained faithful to the last to his work. In early life he united with the Methodist Epsicopal church and supported the gospel in many ways. In every day life he was quiet and unassuming yet over ready to lend helping hand. He was a member of the Modern Woodsmen of Logan. Sylvester, better known as "Bub", leaves a vacancy very hard to fill. The sorrow falls heavily upon a good wife, three children and six grandchildren. Two sisters and one brother will miss the every day cheerful words of our deceased brother. He was a devoted husband a loving father and a kind, tender hearted grandfather. Thus closes the life work of one truly devoted to all. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, three children, 6 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Amelia Dullagham of Peetz, Colo.; Mrs. Luella Orr of San Bruno, Calif; and one brother W.B. Card of Logan, Iowa. The funeral service was held at the late home on Monday afternoon conducted by W.N. Graves. Music was furnished by the male quartet. The pall bearers were from the Modern Woodsmen. The funeral service was largely attended by the friends and neighbors. The floral offerings were beautiful. The Modern Woodsmen conducted their burial service at the grave. Interment was in Logan Cemetery. CARD son of Rev. Kirkland CARD, and Polly CARD, was born in Cass Township in this county, March 30, 1856, moved to STICKLEY Mills, Shelby County, in 1859, and to REEDER's Mill in 1860. In 1863 returned to the farm in Cass Township, and in 1865 moved to Whitesboro, where he lived with his parents until May 5, 1880, from which date until October following he was employed by the C. & N. W. Railway Co., and then worked for Wm. ERVIN on a farm in the Grove, where he remained until February 27, 1883, the date of his marriage to Elizabeth ERVIN BOSTIC. She was born in West Va. April 4, 1856, and came to the Grove with her parents, Wm. and Margaret ERVIN, in the fall of 1856 and lived with them until her marriage to Jos. BOSTIC in 1878, at Whitesboro; they moved to Saunders County, Nebraska, and made their home until the death of Mr. BOSTIC, when she returned to Whitesboro and again made her home with her parents until her marriage to Mr. CARD. They took charge of the CARD farm, where they lived until 1890 when they moved to Logan. Mr. CARD worked two years with the Bridge and Building Department of the C. & N. W. Railway. Co., transferred to track department until 1899, at which date he engaged with his brother in the butcher business in Logan, until July, 1912, when he returned to the track department of the Illinois Central Railway and still on that job until his death, March, 1924.
