The stone here is apparently a cenotaph unless he was reburied. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/1066678/sylvester-payne#add-to-vc Notes: as of January 2018 there are two memorials (2 burial markers or cenotaphs) for a Sylvester Payne of the 44th Illinois Infantry Company G during the Civil War, one located at Saratoga cemetery (Howard Co., IA) ID#116492577, and another located at Bath National Cemetery (Steuben Co., NY) ID#1066678. The location of the burial is assumed to be at Bath National Cemetery and a memorial marker at Saratoga Cemetery, although reinterment has not been research. Though the F.A.G. memorials and burial marker photographs are not sufficient evidence to conclude these two memorials are for the same Sylvester Payne; Linda Linn has provided additional evidence of a military pension history record, N.Y. cemetery record, newspaper article from Cresco, Iowa locating Sylvester Payne of Saratoga, IA in St. Lawrence, N.Y. circa 1900. The question remains as to the current burial location of Sylvester Payne at New York or Iowa. Additional research and a family history would be helpful in the determination of interment.
