Klonis, affectionately known as "Sib", the daughter of Benjamin Harvey and Ora Belle (Sullivan) Smith was born in Mills County South of Malvern, Iowa, on November 25, 1923. She died Wednesday. March 22, 1995, of sudden heart failure at the age of 71 year, 3 months and 27 days. She was raised in the Malvern area where she graduated from the Malvern High School in the Class of 1942. During W.W. II, she joined the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps and later the U.S. Army. Following W.W. II, she met Michael Klonis and they married on November 21, 1955, at Amarillo, Texas. To this union two daughters, Connie and Mary were born. The family moved to Connecticut where Sib was employed as a factory worker. Michael Klonis died on December 10, 1964. Sib continued to live in Connecticut until moving to Sheldahl, Iowa, in 1972. She returned to Malvern in 1975 and is known throughout Southwest Iowa for her volunteer spirit as she served on the Board of Directors for West Central Development, Commander and Adjutant of the Harry Hammons American Legion Post, member of the Mills County Democratic Committee, member of R.S.V.P, member of the Mills County Sesquicentennial Commission and the Malvern Area Betterment Association. She was active in the coordination of all Veteran's activities in the Malvern area with particular interest in the Main Street American Flags, Poppy Days and Memorial Day observance. She organized many funeral dinners for the Legion and Auxiliary. Political activity was important to Sib, who served on the County Central Committee and was a delegate to many county, district and state conventions. She spent many hours hosting the Democratic Party's Mills County Fair booth. She particularly liked to register voters and kept a scrapbook for the party. Sylvia is survived by her mother, Ora Smith of Malvern; daughters, Mary and son-in-law, Dan Peters, of Milford, Iowa, and Connie and son-in-law, Allen Woody of Springfield, Missouri; grandsons, Kasey and Dustin Peters; granddaughters, Kara Woody and Brandee Peters; brother, Richard Smith of Nevada, Iowa; sisters, Daisy Boan of Denver, Colorado, and Alice Sharpnack of Huxley, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern with Rev. Florentine Caole, Jr. officiating. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Friday evening. Interment of ashes was held Sunday at Malvern Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers was the Offut Air Force Military Honors Team. Elsie Vermuelle was the Registry Book Attendant. Susan Stogdill as organist provided the organ solo, "Wind Beneath My Wings". Following the funeral service, the Offut Air Force Base Military Honors Team provided full military rites. A memorial fund has been established in Sylvia's name. Contributor: Kevin J. (50298683)
