Mrs. Brooks, the former Sylvia Pearl Fetterhoff, was born Feb. 3, 1898, in Nevada, the daughter of Benola and Minnie Fetterhoff. She graduated from Nevada High School and then received a teacher’s degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon. She taught school at Plover and Oto where she met and later married Harry A. Brooks Jr. The couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 1971. Mrs. Brooks was a member of the United Church of Christ, Oto; the church Mite Society; the Ladies’ Study Club; the American Legion Auxiliary; the Order of Eastern Star and the Oto cemetery Society. She was an “over 50-years” member of the Mite Society, Study Club and OES. She was crowned Queen for a Day at the 1983 Woodbury County Convention of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs for her long-term involvement with the organization. In 1989, she was honored by the Rodney Congregate Meal Site personnel during Older Americans Month, and in June 1990 the Iowa Clubwoman magazine saluted her as a 70-year member. She also served as the Oto School secretary, chairman of Red Cross drives, city clerk at local elections and counter clerk at Brooks Drug Store in Oto. Survivors include her daughter, Louise brooks Swegle of Oxon Hill, Md.; a son, William Warren Brooks of Oto; three grandchildren, Laurie Swegle of West Des Moines, Sheri Swegle Reynolds of Osceloa, and Gary Swegle of Oxon Hill, Md., and five great-grandchildren, Jason and Ryan Dowie, Sarah and Katie Reynolds and Erin Abner. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ira, Benjamin and Harold Fetterjoff, and a granddaughter, Jo Lynn Swegle Abner. A memorial has been established in her name with the United Church of Christ in Oto.
