Mr. Baker witnessed the drowning of Mr. Abbott, and afterwards married his widow. The river raises with the rains every year and at this fatal spot a road leads across. It was in trying to cross the stream at high water that all lost their lives. Glasco Sun, July 21, 1888, page 1: The body of Pierce Baker was found on Friday about eleven o'clock, one mile below the place where he was drowned. The funeral was held at the Christian church Friday at four o'clock. Glasco Sun, July 28, 1888, page 1:** Died -- Near his home, formerly the Abbott farm, one mile and a quarter west of town, at about 5:30 p.m., Thursday, July 12th, 1888, Pierce Baker, aged 35 years. Mr. Baker had been stacking oats all day, and in the evening went to the river in company with James Dalrymple and Henry Willshire, for the purpose of washing his horses and taking a bath, having arranged to enjoy an ice cream supper at his home that evening. After washing his horses, he led them out on the bank and tied them, then stepped back in the river, and while washing himself, he got into deep water and before his companions were aware of his danger, it was impossible to save him. The body was recovered the next day about noon. The funeral was held at the Christian church at 4 o'clock, Friday, July 13th. James Dalrymple
