Description	:	THELMA ANN REED HENDERSON HOOPES Thelma went to rest in eternity on May 5, 2016 at 95 years of age. She was born in Mina, CA on the homestead of her grandparents and great grandparents, in the home built for her father Fred Reed and mother Daisy Brightenstine Reed on December 27, 1920. Mina is just south of the Trinity County line in Mendocino County and on the Covelo Road. Read More	THELMA ANN REED HENDERSON HOOPES Thelma went to rest in eternity on May 5, 2016 at 95 years of age. She was born in Mina, CA on the homestead of her grandparents and great grandparents, in the home built for her father Fred Reed and mother Daisy Brightenstine Reed on December 27, 1920. Mina is just south of the Trinity County line in Mendocino County and on the Covelo Road. About twenty years ago she wrote her story, "My Life by Thelma Reed Henderson Hoopes" and shared it with family members. It is 96 typewritten pages long, much too long to publish here, so I will condense it greatly. When she was about a year old the little family moved to their own place on Buck Mountain near her grandmother's family, and she grew up there an only child, entertaining herself on the ranch with her animal friends, walking all over the mountains on hand made wooden stilts and being her father's "right hand man" on the ranch. She rode Ole Dina to school on Red Mountain and worked for her room and board so she could attend and graduate from Round Valley High School in Covelo in 1939. In September 1939 she married Leonard Henderson in Reno Nevada. He was born and raised in Covelo and worked on various ranches in the area. In 1941 their first daughter was born and in 1943 they moved to the Dunn Ranch in Humboldt County. They worked for Frank Dunn for a few years and with the Barnwell's before renting the ranch and running sheep and cattle on their own. The youngest daughter was born in 1944. During those years she was NOT "just a housewife." She did all of the housewife duties as well as being a wonderful mother, shuttling her daughters to and from the school bus, being "the right hand man" for all ranch duties delivering baby lambs and calves, doctoring, building fences, riding the range, feeding, cooking for shearing or marking crews, driving tractor, riding her special mare Skeeter all over the range gathering livestock, and so on. Often she worked alone as Leonard was helping out on other ranches to help make ends meet. A few years before Leonard passed away they bought a part of the Wheat Ranch on the Eel River. He passed away in 1970 and she stood up to the call, borrowed money to stock the ranch and the market turned in her favor and she was able to pay it off. She was very proud of her accomplishments and told the story often. A neighbor named Marion Hoopes was working on the Reppas Ranch helped her with some ranch tasks and she helped him with his ranch duties in return. They became good friends and married in 1973. They traveled some, ranched some, and enjoyed their children and grandchildren. A few years later they retired to their newly purchased home in Carlotta, where they raised a huge garden and shared with all the neighbors. Thelma had been on the Dunn Ranch for 33 years and it was pretty hard for her to leave, but she still had the Beatty Creek place which was rented out to a neighboring ranch for livestock raising. They continued to garden, remodel, build a campsite on the Beatty Creek place and cut firewood. When Marion passed away in 1988 they had enough firewood to last her for years. Thelma was known by all of her family as Grandma or Great Grandma. She continued to raise a big vegetable garden and huge flower garden. In fact her 3 acres looked like a park. She ran the garden tractor with rototiller or mower and took pride in her accomplishments. She made beautiful waterfalls and rock gardens as well. Although she was doing just fine, she realized that she was eventually going to need some help and so gave Georgie and Joe Fahl a place to live in exchange for their help. She loved to help people and they enjoyed helping each other and sharing and showing their gardens. Grandma gardened until just a few weeks ago when she cleaned her hanging ferns that were handed to her. It was very important to her to be a Great Great Grandmother and she was a GREAT one. She had a great love for her "offspring." She loved each and every one of them and wanted to make things easier for them. She was very proud of them. Grandma is survived by her daughter Bonnie Grant; granddaughter Bridie Sights Hansen (Jason) and great granddaughters Erica and Erin Hansen, granddaughter Tammi Grant; grandson Dallas Grant (Lynette), great grandson Dustin Grant (Erin), great grandson Dillion Grant (Jessi) and great great granddaughter Emma and great great granddaughter Timberlee Ann Grant arriving in August. She is also survived by Marion's 6 daughters and their families: Nelda, Neena, Shay, Bonnie, Gayla, and Chloe and his grandchildren Shelly, Laurie and Kyle who have faithfully visited her; her caregivers and special daughters Georgie and Melanie and very special friend Sylvia Jutila, and her loyal companion Dandy. She was predeceased by her daughter Janice Henderson Sights, her granddaughter Brenda Rider Grant, her great great granddaughter Denny Lee Grant, her husband Leonard Henderson and her husband Marion Hoopes and her parents Fred and Daisy Brightenstine Reed. She was a member of the L.D.S. Church Fortuna Ward. A VERY BIG THANKS TO BRIDIE, MELANIE, GEORGIE & ERICA. At her request, no formal services will be held.
