Thelma was born on February 3rd, 1924 in Philadelphia, the daughter of Allen K. Burke and Kathryn Cornish. She graduated from high school and completed two years of college credits while working full time. She worked many years as a legal assistant while living in Philadelphia. Couser passed away on Thursday morning, July 8, 2010 at St. Francis' Hospital. Thelma was born on February 3rd, 1924 in Philadelphia, the daughter of Allen K. Burke and Kathryn Cornish. She graduated from high school and completed two years of college credits while working full time. She worked many years as a legal assistant while living in Philadelphia. Thelma met her husband Robert Couser at the beach in New Jersey when he was in training as a U.S. Coast Guard radioman in 1942. After his service years in the Pacific during WWII were completed, he attended Drake University in Iowa but spent each summer with Thelma's family in Philadelphia. He graduated and they married on June 29th, 1951. They moved to Wilmington in 1960 and purchased one of the first homes in the Chatham subdivision. Thelma was a skilled and creative gardener and her husband was her willing helper. Their yard was filled with blooming flowers and shrubs, bird feeders and bird baths. She took classes from Longwood Gardens and enjoyed designing garden areas. She also had a deep interest in history and served as a volunteer docent at Winterthur. They had a second home in the Poconos which they enjoyed throughout the year. They participated in both the Chatham and Pocono communities in civic endeavors. Both felt strong patriotism for their nation and were committed citizens, voting in each election even with advanced age. Thelma and Bob had a series of beloved cocker spaniel dogs; each was considered a cherished family member. Telma is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert Couser and two nieces and a nephew. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 10th at 11 am at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERALHOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilm., DE. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to the Humane Society of DE or the Nature Conservancy of DE. [published 07/10/2010]
