Read More	Robert Max Couser Robert Max Couser Age, 85, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on April 8, 2011 at Forward Manor. Robert was born in the farming community of Colo, Iowa, the eldest child of Arthur and Gladys Couser. Bob's father was a grain and dairy farmer and long-time member of the local school board and from him Bob acquired both a strong work ethic and a sense of civic responsibility, values which would be reflected in all of Bob's later life. U.S. involvement in World War II was ramping up when Bob graduated from high school in 1942. He enlisted in the Coast Guard and after completing basic and radioman training he served aboard the patrol frigate USS Bisbee until discharged in 1946. The Bisbee served as both a patrol vessel and escort for American merchant and military transport ships in the Pacific and Bob was on-board for numerous long voyages stretching from New Guinea to the Aleutian Islands as well as for the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. Bob was very proud of his service in the Coast Guard, where he received four battle stars, and retained a strong allegiance and respect for veterans and military personnel. After the war Bob returned home to attend Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in Marketing with minors in Economics and Business Administration. During his Coast Guard service Bob had met Thelma Burke, a Philadelphia girl, while he was stationed for training at the Coast Guard Base in Ventnor, New Jersey. Bob returned to the Philadelphia area every summer while a student at Drake to work and see Thelma. After graduation he took a permanent position as a sales representative with an electrical equipment distributing company in Philadelphia and he and Thelma were married on June 29, 1951. Bob and Thelma lived in the Philadelphia area until 1960 when they moved to Wilmington and purchased one of the very first homes in the then new development of Chatham, where they remained for the next 49 years and where Bob served for many years on the Chatham civic association. Bob continued his career as a sales representative for Franklin Electric and developed a group of loyal customers whom he serviced until his retirement in 1991. Bob and Thelma had an attractive and extremely well-maintained yard and garden at their home in Chatham which was the envy of many of their neighbors. The two of them took great pleasure in working together in their yard. They also enjoyed spending time together at a summer home in the Poconos. They were life-long bird watchers and dog lovers and had a series of cocker spaniels that they spoiled shamelessly. Bob was predeceased by his wife Thelma, who passed away in July 2010, and is survived by a brother Ray Arthur Couser of Salem, Oregon and a sister Mary Jean Heintz of Decatur, Iowa. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 12, from 10-11 am at the McCRERY & HARRA FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 where a service will begin at 11 am. Burial with military honors will be at 2 pm at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE. Published in The News Journal on April 10, 2011
