Source: Silha Funeral Home ∼Thelma Schwartz, age 88, On the 28th day of April as dusk settled and her children held her in their arms, Thelma Schwartz, age 88, gently took her Savior’s hand and Heaven bound, departing Eastern Montana Veteran’s Home in Glendive, Montana. Visitation will be held at 9:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. Thelma was born to Carl and Thea (Liudahl) Polson, February 15, 1927 at her family home in Lambert. Four grown half-brothers shared in the joy of her birth. She attended Lambert Elementary schools and later graduated with the class of 1944 from Lambert High School. Thelma attended Billings Normal School and began her teaching career at Union School. Because of her tender age of 17, her mother joined her for this adventure to keep the home fires burning. After attending summer school she began teaching in Lambert, “this time there was a neat teacher across the hall”. He was from Bloomfield and had returned from serving in the Army that year. They were married the summer of July 2, 1947 and moved to the Schwartz family farm. She and Melvin were blessed with three children. They later moved to Richey, where they spent their lives. Melvin taught and Thelma nurtured her children, later working as a grocery clerk and Avon representative. She enjoyed her years volunteering for the American Cancer Society. Thelma loved the Lord and desired to follow Him as was evidenced in the way she lived her life. Many times, she declared how thankful she was for growing up in a Christian home and how her parents encouraged her through family worship. At the age of 14 she was confirmed and publicly declared Jesus as her Savior. She continued her walk of faith at Bethlehem Mennonite Church, where she sang in the choir and taught several Sunday school classes. Their pastors over the years encouraged her as she grew in grace. One of her outreach opportunities was serving the community as she maintained the Christian book rack in the local hardware store. She delighted in attending Christian Women’s Club, meeting regularly with her Bible study “sisters”. She was a devoted wife to Melvin and the sweetest and caring mother to Jim, Janet, and Nadine. Thelma saw life’s interruptions as an opportunity to interact and bless others in countless ways. She was a faithful, safe friend. She loved any time at the café in Richey, whether eating or visiting! She enjoyed crossword puzzles and sending cards to others. She lived a most contented life. After their declining health she and Melvin moved to Eastern Montana Veteran’s Home. She quickly settled in, humoring the staff with her constant singing and humming. Hugs and kisses were lavishly given and received as they assisted her with daily life. They truly became her family after Melvin’s death. We children are humbly blessed by the loving care she received. Preceding her in death was her husband, Melvin; her parents; brothers, Alvin, Morel, Walter, and Grant. Phillip and Daniel died in infancy. Left to marvel at her courage and love of Jesus are a son, James (Becky) Schwartz of Dickinson, North Dakota; daughter, Jan (Vern) Brost of Billings, Montana; daughter, Nadine (Neil) Hoff of Glendive; grandchildren, TJ Schwartz, Justin (Margaret) Schwartz, Ryan (Kayla) Schwartz, Tracy (Steve) Neary, Jeff (Tonya) Brost, Dave (Kylie) Brost, and Kyle Hoff; foster granddaughter, Suzannah and her son, James; fourteen great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
