She lived in Kinsley with her parents as a child, her father being an engineer on the Santa Fe. He was killed at Wright, Kansas in the blizzard of 1912. She was married to James Wilbur Carter in Wichita in 1926 and to this union was born one child, Janice, age eight. Read More	THE KINSLEY MERCURY Kinsley, Edwards County, Kansas Thursday, July 27, 1939 Thelma Chalfant Carter was born in Newton, Kansas. She lived in Kinsley with her parents as a child, her father being an engineer on the Santa Fe. He was killed at Wright, Kansas in the blizzard of 1912. She was married to James Wilbur Carter in Wichita in 1926 and to this union was born one child, Janice, age eight. About two years ago Mr. Carter moved with his family to Omaha, Nebr., and they have since made their home there. On July 8, 1939, Mrs. Carter became ill and was taken to the Methodist hospital in Omaha for treatment, but failed to rally and passed away on July 15. Her death was a great shock to her many friends in Wichita, Newton and Kinsley. She is survived by her husband and little daughter; her mother, Mrs. Dora Chalfant; and one sister, Mrs. Ray Ballard of Newton, many other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in Newton, July 17. A life-long friend of the family, Rev. E.N. Cunningham, of Wichita, was in charge. He was pastor of the M.E. church at the time the family lived here [in Kinsley] and read a beautiful poem written by her Sunday school teacher dedicated to her life and work in her Sunday school class.
