She belonged to Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, Harper. On Sept. 12, 1945, she married Joe Kauffman. He died Sept. 6, 2004. Survivors include: two sons, Dennis, El Reno, Okla., and Randal, Harper; two daughters, Cynthia Jo Miller, and Cleta Jean Kauffman, both of Wichita; two brothers, Dewey Hostetler, and Delmar Hostetler, both of Harper; a sister, Rosalea Hostetler, Harper; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, Harper, with Pastor Bob Yates presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Harper, and from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, with the family present. Private interment will be held in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, prior to the service. Memorials may be sent to Pleasant Valley Cemetery Improvement Fund, in care of the funeral home∼Thelma Hostetler Kauffman went to be with the Lord on October 25, 2007 in Harper, Kansas at the age of 84. Thelma is survived by her children, Dennis, El Reno, Okla., Randal, Harper, Cynthia Jo Miller, and Cleta (Cookie) Jean Kauffman, both of Wichita; siblings, Dewey Hostetler, and Delmar Hostetler, both of Harper; a sister, Rosalea Hostetler, Harper. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Kauffman, 1924-2004. Thelma was born on December 1, 1922 in Harper to Ura H. and Della Balmer Hostetler. On September 12, 1945, she married Joe Kauffman, whom she met while working at the local candy counter. In Colorado, the couple welcomed two children, Dennis Ura and Cynthia Jo. After moving back to Harper in 1951, they added two more members to the family; Cleta Jean (Cookie) and Randal Dru. Thelma had many notable talents, including quilting, gardening, and a deep interest in the history of the family. One of her most intense passions, though, was teaching. She taught children at Conway Springs for upwards of 20 years. She was dedicated and innovative, and once shocked the school by doing away with the desks in her classroom! She was an active and dedicated member and volunteer at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, played the organ, and loved those around her. Thelma was a dedicated mother who loved her family deeply. Her memory will be carried on through those who knew and loved her. Her dedication and passion continues to inspire us all.
