Description	:	Additional information provided by Dennis C. Olson Funeral services for Thelma I. Helland, 85, of Cooperstown, were held July 6, 1996, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Binford, with Rev. Daryl Griffin officiating. She died July 3, 1996, at the Griggs County Hospital. Thelma Bakken was born January 20, 1911, in Binford to Ole K. and Dora (Myron) Bakken. She attended Binford School and graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1929. She completed the teacher training course at Valley City Normal School. Thelma Bakken was born January 20, 1911, in Binford to Ole K. and Dora (Myron) Bakken. She attended Binford School and graduated as Valedictorian of the class of 1929. She completed the teacher training course at Valley City Normal School. One of the great joys of her life was her experience of teaching one-room country schools for six years. She married Rudolph Helland September 10, 1937. They farmed in Griggs County until retiring and moving to Cooperstown in 1982. She kept a meticulous daily journal of farm and family activities until just last week. Her faith in God was a deep source of comfort and strength to her, and she was active as a Sunday School teacher and musician in the church. Rudy and she were some of the founders of the Griggs County Historical Society and worked to preserve many sites. She is survived by: her husband, Rudy, of Cooperstown; three sons, Arden (Marianne) of Pasadena, MD, David (Wealtha) of Rockford, IL, and Lowell (Nancy) of Binford; one daughter, Karen (Robert) Nordvall of Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Olson of Verndale, MN; one brother, Oliver (Helen) Bakken of Binford; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Clarence Bakken. Published in the Griggs County Sentinel-Courier, Cooperstown, North Dakota, July 12, 1996.
