Hyler (2001) T.H.Dean and Sons were involved in the construction of many of the first sardine canneries in Monterey. Ted E. Dean said, he met Gladys Ernst at Hovden's Cannery when she was their bookkeeper. He got her attention by throwing nails at her from the roof when she went out to lunch. Hovden's was where the Monterey Aquarium now stands. Hovden's Cannery would can anything, when the fishing was slow. Jack rabbits, mud hens, snakes or anything they could. T.H. Dean and Sons built the Carmel Cannery and Warehouse, where the El Torito Restaurant now stands. The old Warehouse has been converted into another Restaurant. Other canneries constructed by T. H. Dean and Sons, were the Bay Side, the Great Western, and the E. B. Gross. T. H. Dean's homes were demolished to make room for the Carmel Canning Co., warehouse on the south side of Ocean View Blvd. A covered bridge went over Ocean Blvd. [the street is now called Cannery Row] to transport the filled sardine cans for shipping and fish scraps to be used for fertilizer in the Salinas lettuce fields. The Pacific Cannery was south of the Carmel and the San Xavier was south of that. The direction South, indicated from Pacific Grove toward Monterey. Mr. Humes lived in a large two story New England style home south of Reeside Avenue on Ocean View Blvd. He was the superintendant of the Booth Cannery. T. H. Dean and Sons built the Fisherman's Co-op building at 14 Old Fisherman's Wharf. This is the present site of The Wharf's General Store, owned by Nelson W. and Olive L. (Dean) Hyler. The store is managed by their youngest daughter, Joan Leslie Hyler at this date in 2001. Murray Mansion James A. Murray made his money in the Colorado gold mines. He fell in love with a married woman named Haldorn, her marriage didn't stop James. He contacted the husband and bought her freedom so they could marry. James bought the private club house on Ocean View Blvd. which overlook the bay. This become known as the Murray Mansion. He commissioned Theodore H. and son Ted E. Dean to travel up to San Francisco to measure the Dutch Windmill in Golden Gate Park. Upon their return they constructed a 1/3 scale model along side of a creek located on Murray's park property on Ocean View Boulevard near Reeside Ave, now Cannery Row. Ted E. Dean said the quoted cost was $10,000, the main expense being the all-copper domed roof. The Union Iron works in San Francisco made the shafts and gear hardware. Elford has the plans somewhere in his archives. The blades were so finely balanced that the windmill turned just by the wind on the angle of the wood blades without the fabric. A friend of Murray's traveled to Japan quite often and fell in love with a upper class Japanese woman. Her relatives ordered him to leave the country or he would be shipped out in a box. He returned to the U. S. but had to go back to see his true love in Japan. His last trip back to the USA was in a box. Cannery Row A man by the name of W. C. Little surveyed the site of New Monterey about in 1901. A family by the name of Mackabees purchased the water front property across from T. H. Deans home. He build some small cottages for use as vacation homes and named it Mackabee Beach Resort. The famous wreck of the Gipsy occurred there in 1905. The building of the Southern Pacific Railroad into Monterey brought the Chinese railroad workers. After being burned out of Fan Shell Beach in Pebble Beach they settled at China point. They started the abalone and squid fishing industry in Monterey. It is believed that Flora Woods establishment The Lone Star, was the first thriving business in New Monterey (the worlds oldest profession). When the American Navy visited Monterey bay Elford witnessed many drunken brawls in front of Flora Woods establishment. Don Dean remembers when his dad Ted E. Dean took him down to see the Loan Star burn down. Don noticed that each room had different pattern of bright floral wall paper. His dad said that wasn't unusual for that kind of establishment.
