Theodore Lincoln, Jr. Sometimes a good service, or a great sacrifice, lifts a noble life, otherwise only known in the circle of family and friendship, into the general recognition, and makes its premature ending not only a private affliction, but a public loss. So was it in the case of THEODORE LINCOLN, Jr., whose recent death at his father's house in Dennysville, in this county, is reported in our obituary list of this week. His work, and his faculty of working, had been so disconnected with the interests of this community, that it might have been left to the hearts in and around the home out of which he has been taken, to recount his virtues, if he had not placed himself among those martyred heroes, whose names the grateful people claim the right to remember and distinguish. When at the first call for men to defend the Republic, menaced by a formidable rebellion, LINCOLN placed himself in the ranks, to serve as a soldier by the side of his spirited young neighbors, his friends were not surprised by a chivalric resolution in perfect keeping with the high purposes and unselfish conscientiousness that had characterized his blameless life from childhood. Others might have been surprised to find that an integrity that never debated betwixt secondary motives, and a purity that seemed to have grown naturally out of the happiest conditions of birth, qualities that go far toward making up the character of the saint, in him combined with the modest and manly courage that indicates the hero. That courage was not more conspicuous in facing, and inspiring others to face, the bloody perils through which, for three years the Sixth Maine Regiment, whose thinned ranks followed him home as its commander, had passed, than in the calmness and cheerfulness with which, for a whole year, he had watched the development of the disease whose fatality he was the first to be assured of. Of those three years of service and suffering, by which he helped to meet the assault that menaced us all, there is no need now to speak. His work, and that of his comrades, history will tell with pride, and a grateful nation, will remember. All we wish to do is remind ourselves and our fellow citizens, on the occasion of the loss of this one life more in addition to the thousands on the battlefield, and in the hospital, with what choice and precious gifts we have ransomed our land, (if it is ransomed,) from the domination of the fierce barbarism of Slavery, and from the punitory judgments earned by a long injustice. Some years before attaining his majority, with an education mainly scientific, Capt. LINCOLN left his father's house, and entered upon the profession of a Civil Engineer, in the State of Ohio. He carried with him the best heritage of a New England birth, good habits, and honesty. He had none of the vices that beset youth, not so much that they had been repressed by a strict and secluded training, as that, from his clean and gentle spirit, instinct with natural goodness, and perhaps refined and saddened by early ill health, the contamination of evil society seemed to fall off without the power of inflicting. His abilities were at once recognized by his employers, and before attaining full manhood he was entrusted with responsible positions demanding the experience of maturer years. There are important lines of Railroad in Ohio and Indiana, the construction of which he superintended from the preliminary surveys to their complete equipment. For about ten years he devoted himself laboriously to this service, the sole ambition of his professional life seeming to be, to be thorough and to do his duty. He left this employment not because, by the pecuniary mismanagement of the corporations from which he had expected a salary he had been delayed and denied a large part of his earnings, but because he could not remain in a position where his personal integrity was likely to be compromised. He returned home about a year before the outbreak of the rebellion, with health invigorated by congenial out of doors exercise, with a judgment of affairs strengthened by his mechanical studies, and a mind well stored with valuable facts derived from books and converse with skillful and energetic men in the various departments of active life, - every way well-equipped for important usefulness in those branches of practical science in which he had acquired a large experience. When war broke out he prejudged to some extent the fearful proportions to which it would grow. He did not go to it as to a review or to a holiday campaign, with the expectation of getting only a pleasant excitement, nor did he seek a commission with a view of obtaining distinction for pecuniary or political ends. He went because, as he said, somebody must go, and there were very few so disentangled as he from domestic dependencies. He went, thinking of the brother, the friend, the neighbor, with wife and children, that he relieved and permitted to stay at home. He took his place in the ranks as a private soldier, and when the wish was expressed that the company might have the benefit of his prudence and intelligence in the command, he refused to allow any arrangements already made to be disturbed, whereby the ambition of spirited young men might be disappointed. So all through the campaign, though the love of his comrades and their confidence in his abilities was so great, that many of them believed as they ardently expressed it, that he could take Richmond, at a time when this feat seemed so difficult when undertaken by men of superior military pretensions; he always declined to ask any irregular promotion, out of regard to the feelings of the other men, who esteemed military honors higher than he did. Whatever his position was, it was one of toil and responsibility. While officers above and below him availed themselves of his ability and business capacity, his comrades availed themselves of his uniform kindness and generosity. His influence, always on the side of discipline and of morality, was felt not only in his company but throughout his regiment; and every man was a truer patriot, a braver soldier, a more just and temperate man, because his winning example, enforced by his simple and gentle manners, was a constant incentive to every manly virtue. Nor had he the reward only of conscious fidelity; for his comrades, officers of all ranks, and soldiers, appreciated his rare character, and repaid his generosity with affection. Naturally of a cheerful temperament, he had a feeling that for him the war would terminate fatally. Yet he passed through all its open dangers apparently unscathed. More than once or twice he marched in the ranks, when more than half of the regiment that went into battle were either killed or wounded. But he was never wounded, and, save for a few weeks after the fatigues of a campaign that ended at Antietam, never sick. Brave as he was, he had no love for war, no exultation over the slaughter of deluded countrymen. As he went into it from a sense of duty, so he most intensely longed to have it end and successfully, for the good cause he believed involved in it. When at last his regiment was ordered home, and his presentiment apparently contradicted, he felt the strange security of peace, of lying down at night without being disturbed by the midnight alarum or the morning reveille, as the sensation of a new life. It was but a brief dream. Rebellious Virginia, unable to oppose open resistance, man against man, to the throng of her invaders, found means stealthily to poison with her miasmatic vapors, the veins of many brave young soldiers bivouacking upon her dark and bloody ground. An acute and prostrating attack while waiting the mustering out in Portland, showed the form of death by which Capt. LINCOLN was to serve his country. He early recognized the fatal intimation, and accepted it without a word or sigh of complaint. Through most of its course, if his own cheerful report of himself can be wholly trusted, his disorder advanced with little physical suffering, but for the last few days of his life the indications of bodily distress were too apparent. Even then, however, his whole study seemed to be to relieve his friends from anxiety, as though, as one expressed it who watched over him, it was he that was ministering to them, rather than they who were helping him to pass through a great and incomprehensible terror.
