On Monday, July 16, 1923, Ted was severely injured along with his brother Otto, when the steam tractor they were driving to Hooper to exchange for a new one, exploded in Winslow. Ted died on Friday, July 20, living his widow Floyd to raise their two young children. Ted was buried in Hooper Cemetery. Fremont Tribune Monday, July 16, 1923 _____________________________ HOOPER BROTHERS SERIOUSLY HURT BY ENGINE EXPLOSION Ted Fauss in Critical Condition --- Threshing Machine Blows Up ______ Hooper, Neb., July 16. --- Ted Fauss is lying in a critical condition here and his brother, Otto, is painfully burned as a result of the explosion of a steam threshing machine engine this forenoon. The Fauss brothers operate a threshing outfit and they were intending to replace the old steamer with a new and modern engine and were on their way to Hooper from the farm, east of Winslow, to make the exchange. As they were passing the Burlington depot in Winslow, the engine exploded and the men enveloped in steam were thrown out into the road. One of the men was thrown a distance of sixty feet and both were badly burned and injured. The report of the explosion aroused the citizens of Winslow and they hurried to the scene and finding them injured, rushed them to Hooper for medical attention. Ted was the more seriously and is reported this afternoon as being in a critical condition. Otto, while painfully burned, escaped serious injury.
