Busha who sang "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Frank Chase. Pallbearers were four grandsons Jack Halverson, Donald Stole, Collen Jones, and Larry Olson, and two great-grandsons, Bill Jarrett and Larry Hughes. Interment was in Mountain View. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Anderson, Ingald Espe, Emery Jones, Hans Tjaaland, Dick Armstrong, Charles Jones, Tom Kuhn, Herman Uternohle, Creston Crest, Harold Boe. Mr. Olson was born May 27, 1865, in Treble, Fillmore county, Minn., and resided there until he was 19. In 1884 he went to the Red River country of Minnesota, working on ranches in the vicinity of Halstead for two years. At the age of 21 he started out with a prairie schooner a few head of horses and cattle for Devils Lake, Minn., intending to locate there permanently but that same year he decided to return to Halstead. He was married to Ingeborg Hausker on March 14, 1888, near Moorhead, Minn, and they resided in that area until 1889 when he and a cousin decided to head for the new western frontier. They started out on April 7, 1890, and came directly to Big Timber. Mr. Olson bought a railroad section on Swamp creek with a partner who later quit. The late Ed Arneson then went into partnership with him. In 1890, Mr. Olson sold his interest to Ed's brother, Anthony, and embarked on a lumber hauling job to the Castle mountains. This deal didn't pan out, however, and he and Bill Yancey took a contract to dig telephone pole holes from Castle to Martinsdale, a distance of 31 miles. In the fall of 1892, he moved onto a place on lower Big Timber creek part of which is now the Hathaway ranch. He raised oats to be used by an oxen freight line. He was getting 2 1/2 to 3 cents a pound for the oats but lost his shirt the next year when the price dropped to 60 cents a hundred. He ended this venture $40 in the hole. He built a house at Big Timber creek in 1892 and sheared sheep the year after his oat farming experience to clear up his $40 debt. The Olson lived here until 1894 when his wife took up a 125-acre desert claim on Swamp creek, and they added another couple of hundred acres to their holdings there. This is now part of the Clara Grosfield ranch. They resided there for about 14 years. Mr. Olson was nominated for the board of county commissioners in 1906 and while out campaigning got interested in a deal with the late Sam Berg and ended up by purchasing. a 3620-acre ranch on Sweet Grass from Berg, together with sheep and farming equipment. Purchasing sheep in the fall he held them over until early spring and did very well at it for several years. In 1912, he sold part of his holdings on Sweet Grass to Bill Donald borrowed $24,000 from the bank to purchase more sheep. The following spring he sold all the sheep, at a good profit paid off all his debts, and was ready for a new venture. He moved to what is now Sam Morris place on Big Timber creek, erected the large house still situated there and prepared to send his children to school here. Mrs. Olson died following a runaway accident on her way to town in 1913, leaving Mr. Olson with 13 children ranging down to 1 1/2 years of age. It was rough going for some time. In 1916, Mr. Olson married his housekeeper, Mrs. Mabel Dailey, who also had three children. In 1915 Mr. Olson had purchased the old Fallang ranch on Otter creek, and the family resided there until 1928. The fall before this Mr. Olson had been elected county commissioner and in the next spring, the family moved to Big Timber. Mr. Olson served as Sweet Grass county commissioner from 1927 to 1933 and again from 1937 to 1943. For some time he ran the old store and campground at the Boulder bridge. During World War II he was employed at the Mouat mill for several months, and then he and Mrs. Olson took a one and a half year vacation trip on the west coast, visiting five daughters in Washington and California. Mr. Olson retired in 1943, but he was too active to really go into retirement and he had worked at various occupations up until the last few years. Mr. Olson is the father of 15 children, nine of whom are living: Mrs. Mal (Cora) Enie, Edmond, Wash.; Mrs. Norman (Sadie) Pollock.; Kalama, Wash.; Mrs. Gladys Farrell, Alturas Cali.; Mrs. Mildred Radcliffe, Seattle; Clifford Olson, Stevenson, Wash.; Otto Olson, Boulder; Ora Olson, Bozeman; Mrs. Ronald (Mabel) Halverson and Mrs, Harry (Betty) Jones, both of Big Timber; also three step-children, William Dailey of Vancouver, Wash.
