When she was six years of age she moved with her parents to the state of New York, and here resided until later in life. It was while in this state she met Samuel B. Mann and became his bride on May 16, 1863, at Au Sable Forks. Here they established their home for five years and then removed to the state of Michigan, where they remained for six years before coming to Nebraska. Mr. and Mrs. Mann had been married only fifteen months when the call of the nation came to enlist in the Civil War. Mr. Mann responded to this call, and, like the brave courageous soul she was, Mrs. Mann faced life's burdens and tasks alone for nine months when the war was over and her husband was returned to his home, honorably discharged. An urge to come west, where thy might establish for themselves and their children a home was felt. The journey was made and they arrived in Grafton, where the Burlington railway ended, in the fall of 1871. They located their home on a vast prairie in Fillmore County, on the section where the home is now located. With living conditions limited and hazardous winters in both 1871 and 1872, they became discouraged and returned to the state of Michigan, where they remained until 1878, when they returned to Nebraska, this time to establish the home permanently. All the hardships and privations of the frontier life were the experiences of Mother Mann, but her courage never failed, and travelers who crossed the plains, whatever may have been their mission, always found a welcome hand extended into her home and none ever went away hungry from her door. Her religion found its finest expression in the service she rendered to those about her. Those who wished to bring the Gospel message into this community found her ready with her hospitality and contribution to be among the first in the community, even though her religious training and belief differed at the time from those who came. Her family have reaped and are still reaping the rich rewards of so noble a heritage. There were born into this home thirteen children; three dying in infancy. Ten grew to manhood and womanhood. One daughter, the youngest, Mrs. Maude Tysell, passed away since then. The husband, Samuel B. Mann, passed away May 25, 1914. Those who remain are Samuel J. Mann, at home; Rev. F. V. Mann of Oakdale, Neb.; Mrs. Adeline Huntley, Mrs. Gertrude Johnson, Mrs. Alma Johnson of Sutton; Mrs. Esther Myers of Geneva, Mrs. CAaoline Johnson of Davenport, Mrs. Jan Hill of Deweese and Mrs. Susie Tysell of Santa Barbara, Cal. Mrs. Man was a charter member of the Grace United Brethren Church, and while for several years failing health prevented her regular attendance in its worship service, the church's maintenance and well-being were uppermost in her interest and mind. Her faith and trust in a Never-failing Friend and Father grew brighter with the sunset. Her sunset was greeted by Eternity's dawn on the morning of February 3, 1935, letting her life bless earth's pilgrimage for 89 years 2 months and 6 days. Besides the children and their companions who feel so deeply the loss of this loved one, there are thirty-seven grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren; one sister, and a wide circle of friends. Truly may it be said of her, "Life is better for her passing through and Heaven sweeter for her habitation therein." The funeral service was held February 6 at the Grace United Brethren Church and was conducted by Rev. F. R. Wild. The interment was in the Sutton Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal February 1935
