Douglass, son of John and Margaret Douglass was born in Indiana county., Pa., August 12, 1843 and departed this life June 1, 1917, aged 74 years, 9 months and 19 days. He removed to Iowa in 1876 and on August 10, 1872 was united in marriage to Margaret Clarke. To this union were born five children-four daughters and one son. The son preceeded him to the home beyond. the wife and companion of his youth has walked side by side with him in life for more than forty-five years. She with her four daughters and their families, their being four grandchildren are left to mourn his death. the daughters are Mrs. Electa Smith, Mrs. Girtha Yoakam, Mrs. Ada Whistler and Mrs. Hattie Davis. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Margaret Stiffler, of Kingsport, Pa., besides many other relatives and friends. For the past 29 years the Douglass home has been on their farm in Otter Creek township, Lucas county. Mr. Douglass was a veteran of the Grand Army of the Republic having enlisted in the 67th Infantry Penn. Vol. in 1862 and after three years re-enlisted serving until the close of the war. For the past four years he has suffered great pain and inconveniences from a wound received while in the services of his country. For about eleven weeks he was confined to his bed and during all this time of intense suffering he was not only patient but very cheerful. he was brought up in a Christian home, a strict Presbyterian and when about 17 years of age professed saving faith in Christ, though he never took membership in any church organization. Several weeks before his death he renewed his covenant with God and participated in and very much enjoyed the religious services that were several times conducted in his home. He repeatedly gave a happy testimony of being ready and willing for the change. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday June 5, at Bethel Chapel by Rev. C. W. Stewart, assisted by James Marquis it being the request of the family that the latter take part in the service, he having known the departed all his life. The remains were laid to rest in Bethel cemetery. The bereaved companion and children and all relatives have the sincere sympathy of this community. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer
