Graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Will Brown of St. Andrews United Methodist Church officiating, where Adden and his late wife, Gerry, were Charter members. He was married to the late Geraldine Bell Player, the mother of Tom Player, of Atlanta, and to the late Lenora Tyler Player. Born in Turbeville, he spent his early years on a farm outside Sumter, in the small community of Gable on the Black River. The family moved to Orangeburg when Adden was twelve and he grew up in Orangeburg. He enjoyed a long career in banking, initially with the Bank of Cope, which, as he said 'Moved from Cope to Orangeburg during the depression on a flat bed truck.' He went through many mergers with the bank and retired as Senior Vice President. His second career was as Senior Financial Officer of Claflin University, where he made many new friends. He served his country in the United States Army and upon his return to Orangeburg, became interested in the Boy Scouts of America. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 48 and encouraged many boys to achieve scouting's highest award, that of Eagle Scout, including his younger brother, Bob and his son, Tom. Also shaped by the experience of this achievement was retired Air Force General, Buck Shuler. Adden was born on June 10, 1917, to Lyna Adden and Thomas Gleaton Player. He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Louise Wienges and Elizabeth Keels Player. Survivors include his son, Tom Player; sisters, Lyna Player Shaw, of Williamsburg, Va., Caroline Player Blunt, of East Lansing, Mich., Ann Player Murphy, of San Antonio, Texas; brother; Robert Wightman Player, of Vancouver, Wash. and grandchildren, Jacob Adden Player, of Austin, Texas, Thomas Brett Player, of Atlanta, Dr. John Gregory Player, of Charleston, Cannon Sayers, of Atlanta and Bailey Thomas Player, of Athens, Ga., as well as four great-grandchildren and special friend, Annie Tickle, formerly of Orangeburg; and children of his second wife, Lenora Tyler Player, Dr. Mike Tyler and Kenneth Tyler, both of Charleston. The family will receive friends at graveside. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave., Suite 101, North Charleston SC 29405. Arrangements are by Dukes-Harley Funeral Home of Orangeburg.
