Baird Is Stricken at Mill in Spokane Thomas A. Baird, 80, president of the Baird-Naundorf Lumber company, dropped dead of a heart attack yesterday while watching operations at the company's mill, N 3607 Market. Apparently in the best of health, Mr. Baird ate a light breakfast yesterday and drove to work as usual. His death came as a shock to his many friends and business associates. Born in Chipman, New Brunswick, Mr. Baird entered the lumber and logging industry in New Hampshire in 1883. Four years later he moved to what was Montana territory and started logging for himself. He opened the first sawmill at Victor, Mont., in 1897 and in 1915 started the mill at Warland under the name of Baird-Harper Lumber company. A year later he came to Spokane and built a mill at Hillyard, the Barid-Naundorf Lumber company. Men Kept on Jobs During depression years his business partner, Alfred G. Naundorf, recalled, Mr. Baird made personal sacrifices in order that his men might continue their employment and his agreeable affiliations with labor were remembered by many. "Mr. Baird's death is a great shock to me. He was the friend of his employees and was constantly interested in their working conditions," said Mr. Naundorf of the death of his partner. Mr. Baird was chairman of the finance committee of the First Baptist church and was to have attended a meeting of the committee last night. He was instrumental in the most recent building and improvement program of the church. High in Masons. Survivors are his widow, Annie, at the home, W 337 Fourteenth; two sons, Harold in Tacoma and Alva Baird, Los Angeles, income tax expert; two daughters, Mrs. Eloise Bolt, Seattle, whose husband is an Army major, and Mrs. Ray Beil, wife of the Spokane housing center official. Mr. Baird, besides his church affiliations, was a member of the Hoo-Hoo club, lumbermen's organization; the Spokane Chamber of Commerce and was a high Mason. The body is at Smith's.
