THE FRIDAY UNION Friday, October 25, 1901 Obituary Thomas Baldwin was born in Wilkes county, North Carolina, Aug. 13, 1819. In the fall of 1820 he removed with his widowed mother to Indiana where he grew to manhood. On Dec. 31, 1843 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy A. Dilland and to this union there were born eleven children, seven of whom survive their father. In the fall of 1854 Mr. Baldwin moved to Monroe county, Iowa, where he has lived and reared his family. He was one of the oldest settlers of Monroe county, having lived here 48 years. On Oct. 21, 1901, death called him away at the advanced age, 82 years, 2 months and 8 days. A loving companion, no living in the evening of life, three sons and four daughters and sixteen grand children weep over the departure of their loved one. Of the sons, one is in Monroe county, Iowa, two in Kansas, of the daughters two are in Monroe county, one in Beatle county, South Dakota. Mr. Baldwin was afflicted with a cancer on the face for about 13 years. This was not the cause of his death, for many months he had heart trouble and suffered greatly with the dropsy all these seemed to combine to over power their victim. Deceased has been a sufferer for many months with the sickness which at last took him away. He has suffered untold misery and pain until weary with the burden and exhausted with the load, casting it all from him, he laid down by the way to rest. His life went out just as the seon of his career had fallen behind the western horizon and in going down, its rays had kissed the summits of far off hills as a traveler weary, worn and tired, toiling with the burdens of this life, at evening time pushes them aside and then lies down to rest so in the pilgrimage of man when the end of the journey comes, weary and exhausted having endured the heat of many summers and faced the storms of many winters, he sinks at last to rest. Mr. Baldwin was a kind husband, a loving father, a good neighbor, a highly honored and much respected citizen. The community feels its deep loss. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Selection, services were held in United Brethern church of Selection and conducted by the pastor Mr. S. S. Wyand. We speak words of cheer hope and peace to those who weep.
