The following is an excerpt of an article written by Bruce MacGunnigle: Historic Houses in EG By Bruce MacGunnigle The Bateman Store, 442 Main Street There are three handy ways to zero in on the date a building was built. Two are from the deeds, which almost always list a building if there is one, and the price of the property listed in the deeds before and after the house is built will also reflect a substantial increase in the price. The third way is to consult the many atlases that show the evolution of the Village of East Greenwich issued in 1855, 1862, 1870, 1879, 1884, 1891, 1895, 1896, 1903, 1910, 1923, 1927 and 1940, as they all show the location and shape of the buildings, and frequently name the resident, or they type of business located there. The real problem comes when the building is built before 1855, and when there is a long time period between sales. That’s the case with the Bateman Store at 442 Main St., on the corner of Union St.: the land was purchased in 1819 by Thomas Bateman (1777-1844), and sold in 1846 by his son Thomas Bateman (1816-1875), the executor of his father’s estate. The 1846 deed specifies that the property includes “the store thereon standing.”We know that Thomas Bateman built this 4,485 square foot building sometime in the 27 years between 1819-1846. We know also that Bateman owned most of the land on the east side of Main St. from London St. to Rocky Hollow Rd., and we also know that the old Dry Salters Mill built 1836 was directly across the street at 461 Main St. Given these facts, I’d estimate that Bateman saw the need of a store to cater to the mill workers, and built the building at 442 Main St. ca. 1840. Thomas Bateman was listed as a butcher in a 1811 deed, but in later deeds as a Yeoman, or a farmer. While his Bateman grandparents were born in England, he was also descended from many of the prominent families of East Greenwich and North Kingstown, such as Nichols, Spencer, Fry, Greene, Arnold, Allen, and Reynolds. The older Bateman is buried in Island Cemetery, Newport, and the son and his wife Mary Arnold at Greenwich Cemetery here in town.In 1846 Thomas Bateman, Jr., sold the store to Benjamin Cossens a Providence Lawyer.
