Thomas Blakley, a well known resident of Poweshiek County, died at his home, Sunday, after an illness extending over the last eleven months. His health has been precarious and his life dispared of at serveral different times during these recent months. The... Read More	He was the son of Mathew Blakely (1799-1843) and Alice Lucas (1796-1847). Thomas Blakley, a well known resident of Poweshiek County, died at his home, Sunday, after an illness extending over the last eleven months. His health has been precarious and his life dispared of at serveral different times during these recent months. He took a severe chill Saturday night about 10 o'clock and rapidly grew weaker until the end came at 9 o'clock a Sunday a.m .He was a ripe old age being at the time of his death in his 84 year. The deceased was born in Fermanaugh County, Ireland, in 1828 and came to the states in April, 1848 when a lad but twenty years of age. He located in Illinois and February 5, 1855 was married to Anna McRoberts, who proceded him in death 17 years ago. They came to Iowa in 1868 and located southeast of Montezuma residing on the old home place until 1894 when they removed to Montezuma. Eight children survive: Ella Jane Malcolm of Belle Plaine, Alice Putnam of Barnes City, William, Matt, John, Ida Fletcher McCormick, Mary Taylor, and Miss Anna at home, who has cared for her father so tenderly in his last illness. Two brothers also survive, William of Rock Island county, IL, and Edward, of Fremont, Iowa. The funeral was held at the residence.-Information from the Weekly Republican (Montezuma, Iowa) 10-12-1911. Nellie Farley wrote this: Mr. Thomas Blakley, my grandfather, lived at one time on land in IL near Preemtion. He built them a house and was preparting to build a barn, when he became afraid of a tribe of people who were trying to keep the land for themselves and drove people away. He was afraid they would kill his family, so he made a covered wagon, loaded up their belongings and started west crossed the Mississippi River and came to Poweshiek County in 1868. They said grandma Anna Blakley walked beside the wagon, carrying Aunt Anna and the family bible. Blakeley or Blakely (Blakley) we spelled it but grandma Anna Blakley spelled Blakely in the family bible.-wrote by Nellie (Blakley)Farley when still liviing He was baptized in Clones, County Monaghan, Northern Ireland, on 17 April 1829
