Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Christian Church in Hillsboro. Pastors Mark Caston and David Doer will officiate. Read More	Obituary Thomas D Hawbaker, 71, of Hillsboro, died at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. He suffered a catastrophic stroke. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at the Christian Church in Hillsboro. Pastors Mark Caston and David Doer will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillsboro Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will begin on Monday, April 21, at the Beatty Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, where family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Memorials may be designated in the name of Thomas D Hawbaker to the Hillsboro First Responders or Kinder-USA, a relief fund for children of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Jordan. Born February 28, 1932 in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Charles Dewey and Hazel (McCabe) Hawbaker. On July 31, 1955, at the Hillsboro Christian Church, he was united in marriage to Nancy Ann Dodds. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1950, after which Mr. Hawbaker enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served on active duty in the Korean Conflict as the youngest staff sergeant in the 1st Marine Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. Mr. Hawbaker graduated with a B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant in 1957. He farmed in the Salem area and taught high school and junior high in Denmark and Colfax, Iowa. He earned a Masters degree in history from the University of Wyoming in 1963. In 1963, Mr. Hawbaker joined the Central Intelligence Agency and served with distinction as an intelligence officer in both Washington, D.C. and in the following Foreign Service postings: Amman, Jordan, Vietnam, Cairo, Egypt, Colombo, Sri Lanka and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Mr. Hawbaker received the Intelligence Commendation Medal in 1984. In retirement, he returned to live in Hillsboro, Iowa. Survivors include his wife Nancy of Hillsboro, three sons, Thomas A. (Deborah) Hawbaker of rural Mineola, Iowa, Joe M. (Mary) Hawbaker of Omaha, Nebraska and Steven Woodrow (“Woody”), recently returned from teaching in South Korea. He leaves behind five grandchildren, Katie, Luke, Sarah, Henry and Thomas Daniel, his mother-in-law Lola Sainsbury of Mt. Pleasant, four sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Woodrow Charles Hawbaker.
